MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

Had a few things done on the Arctic yesterday, one of the front wheel hubs had come loose and was droning like a mofo, had that done, rear discs & pads had gone so they're done, now need to get the wheels refurbed and one rear tyre has a (safe) nail stuck in it, fun times!

Sadly a fair bit of rust around the underside but a lot of it is flaking, need to find a good way to treat it.

Any recommendations on a good place for a refurb? My local specialist wheel centre, who in fairness are very good, are asking £102 per wheel for a full refurb & powder coat, but I'm thinking that's a lot more than I've heard people talking about in the past!

Both my local places quoted about £70 a corner for refurb and powder coat when I enquired about the Mondeo so that does seem pricey. They both have a good reputation too but up in Stockport so not local to you unfortunately.

hmm, bit too much travel, I just don't want to be overpaying.

I'll see if there is anything good & recommended around Leicester, not sure the car will be much use for a few days with no wheels!!

:D Hell yeah, supercharged.....I'll get some better pictures when it's not raining and i can get the proper camera out without drowning it.

She's also got Meister R Zetec S Coilovers, which are a bit low for my taste on the default setting so I'll be raising it 10mm or so all round.

But with those, a full geo set up and the supercharger mapped on the road (they reckon a couple of hours on a dyno will be needed for optimum performance but it's a good safe map for now) it's scary how quickly you can be going too quickly without realising. As I predicted though, it's now teeming it down and I'm still to get the ditch finders off the rear wheels, hence me typing here and not using lots of petrol....

Next on the list is a bluetooth sender for the Megasquirt app on my phone, that or get a laptop to plug in the USB tuning cable now installed in the glove box.

Isn't there a place is Birmingham that does wheel powder coating for around £25 a corner.... City Powder coaters or something

I'll have a look around and check them out, off work for half term in a fortnight so could be an idea, but I do need a full refurb on them too, so I think £25 will be PC only, cheers though :)

Speaking of which, opinion on colours of wheels, not my car below but same model & colour! I was contemplating new wheels, but with it being a LE, I feel the right wheels do work...

Who did your SC?

It's a Kraftwerks kit, made to work on a UK car by AK Automotive near Newcastle and an ECU by Reverant from Mx5nutz.

Top guys all of them, except Kraftwerks........though TBF the garage were impressed with the kit aside from the fact it was sold as a bolt on and it wasn't, but better than most they see.

What power does it make? And I'm guessing the rotrex is properly loud at the top end too? :D

I won't know on power until i get it properly mapped on a dyno, they've basically done a tweak of Reverant's base map on the road using the tuning software and a laptop.

In terms of how it drives, it's great, just what i wanted.

The power delivery is just like it's got a bigger engine, just pulls more all through the range which i like.

The only extensive turbo experience I've got is with my Octavia vRS which, while entertaining in a straight line, i just don't find as satisfying when "driving", the way the boost comes and then builds i just find harder to balance while cornering quickly.

The noises are very entertaining :D I sort of like it that people will just see a standard looking MX5 with a slight whirring from the engine bay, that would sound unhealthy in any other car, the actual supercharger is pretty quiet, it's largely belt and pulley noise.

But then you go and it really starts to give some induction noise, lift off and there's a faint hiss as the excess air is quietly let go, or change gear for the full relatively subtle dump valve sound.

It's still got the standard, probably original, exhaust which while sound is corroded as are a few heat shields i suspect, so there's a few odd rattles and vibrations at certain revs, but otherwise it's relatively stealthy.

Cool! Did you import it yourself?

Also, i want to use the http://tunerstudio.com/index.php/shadowdashmsmenu software.

What do you reckon the best way of doing so would be?

I've got an Android phone, there's a normal USB in the glovebox for a laptop or you can get a bluetooth adaptor for the serial port on the ECU, but the one that's pre configured to work with the ECU is quite expensive for a bluetooth transmitter http://tunerstudio.com/index.php/cablesandbluetooth.

MSDroid looks like a far better package. Cleaner interface, more features etc

It can also do this for trackdays etc

Nice, was it this kit? What was the import duty charge like? What other extras were required to get it up and running?

Ah yes, i did see that, will give it a go. The only problem is it allows tuning from the app, could be dangerous in the wrong hands....

Anyway I just found my old Motorola tablet while hunting out the charger for an old laptop, is there any reason why I shouldn't be able to use a female USB coupler to convert the male USB coming out the ECU into the micro USB cable for the tablet?

Dropped mine off this morning for the sills to be repaired. Knew they had been done in the past and were starting to show some discolouration. Seems like they were just patched before and not done properly.

Ill post some pics up when I can get them of my phone.

Can't get the photos off my phone that I was sent in a slideshow by text.

Here are a few snaps that the chap who did the repairs posted on Nutz.
