MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

You could probably pick something decent up for that much at the moment. Prices seem to have dropped a bit since last year when I was looking.

Got the splitter on today and am fairly happy with how the car is at the moment. Got my eye on a duck tail spoiler and i need to source another black wing to replace the "so i can pass my MOT" blue wing.

That is just awesome! I want one. :D

Ask me again on 2nd September when I have it fitted :D

very jelly - I'm very close to phoning up and getting some more details, got the money in the bank and a hankering for some more power, it seems very cheap for what it is!

Whats the process like? How long do they need the car for & whats the waiting list like?

Looking forward to a mini review when you get it back :D

Picked up a basic mk2 1.8i few weeks ago and just got it how I want it for now.

Today

coilovers, enkies, Toyo T1R, Hunteralignemnt, good clean and service.

Got some dinotrol and paint for the black sills. Did lots of little things like 12v-5v 5A usb charger and hidden usb input for stereo. Nardi wheel.

Just need to enjoy it now.

Collected my MX5 from BBR today... :)

Engine spec is now:

BBR 'Super 200' spec cams
BBR custom EcuTek remap
Racing Beat 4-1 stainless exhaust manifold
Milltek exhaust system (mid pipe including 200 cell cat, and backbox)
Pipercross panel filter

The lower lines show how it performed when it went in to BBR, this was before the cams were fitted, the car also had a different map (not a very good one), and a dip in power between 4k and 6.5k rpm caused by a faulty variable inlet manifold runner control mechanism. This fault took a while to diagnose, not something common on these cars..

6ltlDOj.jpg

Before - 174.5 bhp and 150lb ft
After - 200.3bhp and 166lb ft

The curve shows the gains are substantial across the rev range, peak torque at 3450rpm makes it pretty effortless to drive, and it even drives like a standard car at very low revs (will roll along with no throttle in 1st/2nd gears in traffic etc). It drives more smoothly, and is a good bit faster as well.

My MX5 is giving my grief at the mo. Had a very expensive month as tax/mot/replacement parts were needed, now I've got a really weird handling issue going on with the rear of the car.

Whenever I go over an uneven road surface, the rear of the car feels pretty wobbly and unstables. Tire pressures are all good at 26psi, so I'm guessing possibly wishbone bushing. Also the suspension upfront and in the rear is squeaking horribly. Unfortunately these are pricey and labour would be expensive too. Then I've got multiple other bits that need doing on the car too, like exhaust needs welding, new front discs/pads, handbrake needs sorting etc etc... The car is getting the suspension fully checked out on Thursday to see what exactly is going, but if it is a lot of suspension work needed I'm thinking of:

Selling on (has new MOT/Tax, but suspension work will need doing)

Or

Breaking it.

It's a 1991 Eunos Auto 1.6 V-Spec edition. Tan leather interior and BRG paint. The AC doesn't work, but the engine is solid and no rust on chassis.

I'd imagine value wise the car is probably worth about £1200 if all in good condition? But with potential work needed, breaking it might be a better option?

What do you guys reckon, please?

Thanks :)

Does make me sad that i am too tall for these :( looks superb.

My MX5 is off to Deepcar Autobodies at the end of October to get all the rust sorted out. Just discovered another patch on the driver door though so hoping that isn't as deep as it looks. Bloody thing.

Once it comes back, it's going off road for the winter and getting:

New droplinks
New bushes
New discs and pads
Wheel refurb
Underseal

Going to be a decent project. After that the interior needs sorted. New seats and steering wheel mainly. :p

Off to look at a 03 1.8 sport, mk2 later today. Pictures show a little rust around the arches but nothing major. However, my major concern is the mot is due in October. Anything obvious I should look for which will cause concern (read : money) at the mot?
Car is a few hundred quid above budget, and having to mot and tax it in October makes me worried about buying a lemon. Missed out on a great looking one already this week.

You must check the front chassis rails on mark 2 and 2.5. Guides on nutz and the owners club about how to check them. The usual mx5 things like rear sills and arches as well.

Doing a DIY replacement of a wheel bearing at the moment. Anyone else done one? I've heard pulling the hubs is a bit of a ballache. Am I reading right the best way to do it (without a hub puller) is to partially screw on the axle nut and then hammer the axle back through the hub to free it? Given I'll be replacing the nut anyway...

Hmmm, I did a front one. Came off easy enough without a puller, aside from the inner race being fused to the spindle. I ended up cutting a notch into it then smacked it wit ha chisel to spin it off as I couldn't get a puller behind it. I assume yours is a rear?

Hey guys, as of a few months ago I'm now an MX-5 Owner, quick blurb (with a few questions)

The car in question is a 2004 MX-5 Arctic in Razor Blue, the car has been in the family a few years, so me getting it is bittersweet, my Mum bought the car about 3 years ago, and sadly died a year later due to cancer, so was unable to enjoy the car for long :(

My Dad has kept the car garaged and used it briefly over the last 2 years, but not much, when my girlfriend's MG F started going the way of the Dodo it seemed a good idea to accept his loan and eventual gift of the car, so a free MX-5 - and in blue (and with matching hard top)!

The car has a few issues which I need to sort out and am seeking some advice:

Wheels are peeling a lot in the center, but both passenger sides wheels are losing 3-4 psi per week, I've been quoted around £100 to have them sanded around the rim which should be a short term fix, or £300 for a full refurb & painting, is the £100 jobby even worth it? Would also be tempted to go with black on the wheels, but unsure if it would suit or not!

I'd like to get a new stereo that'll support an ipod/iphone rather than the traditional CD player that is in the car, doesn't need to be double din, but would like something that will support the car's 7 speakers & make good use of them, nothing too expensive sadly, but just something that gets the job done, I'm no massive audiophile but don't want to go bottom rung!

The aircon seems dead, I know, the aircon is roof off, but when its warm & raining, I do miss being cool inside, I'm having a free re-gas tomorrow as the car seems to be completely gasless, but I'v ebeen told that points to a possible leak in the system, is there any particular place i should be looking as a possible main cause of this?

The exhaust seems to be blowing a fair bit, the car has been sitting for the best part of 2 years and I think corrosion on the exhaust is quite heavy, I don't know a massive amount about cars, but am I right in thinking a lot of standing then being used a lot can maybe cause harm & blow holes in a rusted area? As said, I don't know much, but maybe this could be a good time for a 3rd party exhaust? I'm looking for opinions on something that gives a nice, more powerful sound than stock, but not something that is going to make my ears bleed or draw attention for the wrong reasons!

Thanks again for any advice any of you could offer!

Does make me sad that i am too tall for these :( looks superb.

How tall? I'm 6'4" and having driven a mates mk2 I could juuuust about get on with one if I fitted a small steering wheel and either did something to the seat to lower it and move it back, or swap in some buckets on custom rails. That was a mk2 though, I doubt I'd ever get in a mk1 without major modifications (most likely to my legs :)).

Dropped mine off this morning for the sills to be repaired. Knew they had been done in the past and were starting to show some discolouration. Seems like they were just patched before and not done properly.

Ill post some pics up when I can get them of my phone.

Good luck!

Going through the same thing on my mk1 at the moment, but I am going to have a go at doing it myself  got both rear sills and arches to do.
