MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

Early Mk1's are only available in 1.6 and are fine. The 1.6 was hobbled later on when the 1.8 came out and it is these ones that should be avoided.

"Rust free" is a very loose term in MX5 circles. I saw "rust free" ones that had bubbling arches, I saw "rust free" cars that had sills that crunched like a bowl of corn flakes when I gently pressed on them. In the end I bought the closest I could find to rust free but paid a hefty premium for it. All of the waste of time ones were found via MX5 Nutz, the one I bought was from MX5OC but was also listed on AT.

Mk1 has a more retro feel to it both inside and out. My one is a '97 but it looks quite a bit older than that IMO which I like as I wanted a classic car without the hassle of a proper classic. Mk2 has a more modern interior. Look at and sit in both and you'll know the one for you.

Bit foggy driving my new car home last night.

How do people rate RainSport3s on Mx5s?

I've got a 4 to come off the wheels on my old escort to go onto another set of wheels on my 5. It's currently got Barum Bravuris fitted all round with about 3-4mm on them. The lack of traction at the moment is quote frankly hilarious and terrifying all in one go.

tyres pressures are 26psi cold all round

28psi all around is suppose to be the golden number for a a mk2. Rainaports got ok reviews. Give them a whirl if you have 4 already. I think the best affordable tyre is the Michelin pilot sport for about 70 quid a piece from quick fit.

I assume you mean Pilot Sport3s? Looking at the price of them on camskill I'd rather stump up another 60 quid a set and go with AD08Rs given the price of the Michelins.

It had 28psi in when I bought it, certainly better turn in feel etc but rear end grip was horrendous, the lightest touch of the throttle in second on a wet roundabout saw it sideways

Might be worth getting your alignment checked and set up if you haven't already. Bad alignment will make any tyre feel rubbish. The Rainsport 3s get good reviews by the guys running them on Nutz, however so do T1Rs and they're ****ing horrendous!

4 Wheel Alignment is on my list of things to do already. I was impressed with the RainSport3s on my Escort estate and as they're 195/50/15 too and that being scrapped I'm swapping the tyres onto a spare set of wheels I've got for the MX5.

I've never liked T1Rs a mate had them on a 1.4 ibiza and they we're horrific even in mildly damp conditions

That's the ones I meant, pilot sport 3s. I read a bunch of reviews and they seemed very good. I've got them on the front and Dunlop sports on the back all at 28psi. I find the car handles very well. If you haven't done it all ready a cheap way of seriously stiffening up body roll and making a very noticeable difference is to replace the anti roll bar bushes with poly bushes they are under 30 quid for the whole set. .massive improvement

I've got a second set of wheels so I want maximum grip for day to day then swap the wheels if I want to play at Drift What Ya Brung at santa pod

Won't you only need to swap out the rear wheels for drifting abuse?

Yea, but having 4 spare wheels to take to a drift day means less time spent waiting for tyres to be changed, and I already had a spare set of wheels so it's not like I've bought 4 wheels when I could have bought 2

Hi there,

Does anyone know if these 15" wheels fit over the larger sport brakes? I want to ditch the 16s for these as they look nicer and frankly tyre's are quite a bit cheaper.

Kind Regards

Alec

I'm fairly certain they do. I've got the larger sport brakes set up on my mk2 and had various 15" wheels fitted without issue. My current winter wheels are very similar in style and size to the stock mk2 alloys and fit over the brakes easily.

Sold my 1.8is mk2

Rainsport 3's like Clarkey said have more grip than required for one of these, never had a hairy moment in it despite really trying to unstick it sometimes!

If anyone is after some 6 month old MeisterR coilovers for one of these, keep your eye out on ebay in the coming week as I will put them on there when I get the time!

These wheels may be up for sale soon for very cheap as I am currently bidding on a different set and if I win I will be swapping the tyres over. So my wheels as pictured will have no tyres on and be going for about £50 collected.
Cheers
