Early Mk1's are only available in 1.6 and are fine. The 1.6 was hobbled later on when the 1.8 came out and it is these ones that should be avoided.
"Rust free" is a very loose term in MX5 circles. I saw "rust free" ones that had bubbling arches, I saw "rust free" cars that had sills that crunched like a bowl of corn flakes when I gently pressed on them. In the end I bought the closest I could find to rust free but paid a hefty premium for it. All of the waste of time ones were found via MX5 Nutz, the one I bought was from MX5OC but was also listed on AT.
Mk1 has a more retro feel to it both inside and out. My one is a '97 but it looks quite a bit older than that IMO which I like as I wanted a classic car without the hassle of a proper classic. Mk2 has a more modern interior. Look at and sit in both and you'll know the one for you.
