MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

What don't you like about it? I think it's great, not totally sold on the rear light arrangement but it's got more character than the mk3 looks wise. Smaller, lighter, lower... Interior looks nicely designed too.

I just think the front and rear look awful.

The rear isn't good. Don't mind the front, reminds me overall of the first gen Z4.

The ~£19k for the base one seems a bit much to me.

Find me any brand new RWD six speed two seat roadster with an lsd for less than 20k brand new in the UK. In fact.... Make that 25k. You will struggle.

Only 130 bhp and 165bhp engines and, as you say 19k+ minimum for a base model. Very disappointing.

130 and 165hp a ton respectively; not too shabby for a 'sports' car! I'm sure there will be a group along shortly to say it needs at least 250hp and 18x8 wheels to be 'fun'

The mk1 mx5 sold for £14,249 upon release in 1990, if anybody want to adjust for inflation to see how that compares to 19k for the mk4. That was more than a 16v mk2 golf gti at the time by the way, but they never struggled to sell mx5s.

Yup, 19k for a mk4 is stupid....oh wait.

It is when you compare it to other cars. Also it stated 19,995, so 20k in that article. They also said that realistically they expect it to be more like £22k.

And how much are other comparable two seater roadsters these days? The Z4 starts at £27k for example.

130bhp is awful for a 'sports car' . Most Fiesta's with that 1L eco boost have 125bhp these days.

He said 130bhp per tonne. Going by Parkers, the Fiesta is 112BHP/tonne.

But that aside, there's a lot more to a "sports car" than big power output, making comparisons of power figures a bit pointless. Even if a 1.0 litre shopping trolley could match it's power output, which one do you think would provide the most engaging and "sporty" drive?

IMO Mazda know the success of the previous versions was down to being a relatively benign RWD "sports car" that appealed to the masses because it never bit your face off if mishandled.

They've stayed true to that, bucked the general trend in cars by making it lighter and smaller and hence a great seller still but with so much potential for the likes of BBR who will offer the full fat drivers version, as well as the more unoffical tuner market.

If they can keep it near 20k with a BBR version nearer the competitors I think they'll have got it about right.

Not a fan of the back end but the rest is very nice.

The power argument will always be there with this sort of car. It comes up whenever the GT86 is mentioned and it will be the same with the MX5. My previous car was only around 200 bhp (slightly tweaked Octavia vRS) but when I was back in the market for a car that was purely for pleasure I consciously decided I wanted something with less power and made me work for what power there was. It means I can work the car a bit before being at licence losing speeds. When plodding around I miss the torque of the Octavia but when pressing on... you can keep your torque and I'll stick with buzzing up to 6000 rpm thanks.

If I was ever in the market for another one I would certainly consider the new model.

I like the lip on that. Is it functional at all?

Had mine re-tweaked on the geometry last week along with a few niggles sorting out (petrol cap flap not opening etc).

I also tweaked my fuelling tables after much research on the subject and looking at other people's AFR tables, it'll still be much richer than a proper tune will get it but still feels like its a bit pokier.

That and having the under steer dialled out, perhaps too much so given the tail out incident yesterday...

Had mine back form the insurance repair now for about 2 weeks, all looks & feels good, the paintwork was done so well, can't even see a blend between new & old!

Will get some pics up asap!
