MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

I had nothing major on my 105k mile 98 model in the 6 months I've owned it, a couple of coolant hoses and the water pump inlet pump at (£96).

Went to see an NB yesterday but it looked a bit poo and rust beginning. Also it was silver.

I've been limiting my search to Sports, but occasionally I see a base model, 1.8i that looks a treat... but no leather nor any of the other stuff.

Am I being too picky over spec? I know most stuff is relatively easy to retrofit.

It's a tricky one, a clean base model will cost you in parts to bring it to the spec you want, where as a ropey top spec car will cost you in bodywork.

Try and find a NB 1.8 import. 146bhp engine, 6 speed box, 3.9 ratio lsd, and generally in better condition to a UK one (this mostly depends when it was imported though)

I also personally hate the mk2.5 sport leather seats. They sit you really high and offer no real support. I nearly slid out of my brothers on track before he sold them for some bucket seats.

Yeah, I'm going to see a clean looking base spec later today. My latest thinking is that it's going to give me an idea whether I love the car or not, if I buy it. If it works out then I can begin to throw money at it knowing i'm not speculating so much.

Yes. Man brain.

I'm about to sell a 1.8iS, need to get the arches done and sort a few bits with the interior, but its a pain in the ass to do when i'm not motivated.

Guys.

My clutch pedal has always had very little travel, driving earlier it was biting lower and lower until by the time I was home the clutch wasn't fully disengaging. It did it one day last week and I went back an hour later and it was fine. I suspect slave cylinder, is it worth doing master and slave for the sake of a couple of hours spannering and £100

Having spent my past week in and around mx5s, I thought I would post in here in case any of you lot found this interesting.

picked up my girlfriends new Black Edition Mk3.5 this week. Very good car, I am massively impressed with it. We got really lucky, it was a one owner vehicle and the guy selling it was an older gent who had clearly treasured it. It was on 50k which seemed a lot but has all the services in place. and 4 nearly new tyres and brakes so everything was good to go.

She wanted a black edition as it was her ultimate goal anyway so I just trawled AT until one popped up. It could have only been better if it was the spirited green one but they go for silly money and are rarely for sale.

Here's the new one.

So on with taking the racing beat system off the car and putting the stock cat back system in place. after that, a wash and prep for sale. took a few nice pictures for auto trader.

On the plus side, I will never have to clean these bloody wheels ever again.

Like the new 'un! Very much wish I'd got a facelift Mk3 myself now rather than a 2008 car, given the better looks and stronger engine (higher rev limit would be fun).

This leaves the issue of having a drive full of convertibles.

How much was it if you don't mind me asking. My friend has been trying to sell his 2012 Kuro without much luck.

He had it listed for £10750. A 2011 car with 50k.

We got it for £10k.

The Kuro is the white one with the decals right? As far as I know they were in the £12k region. She liked that model but they were all out of budget. The black editions with lower mileage have all been in the same price category too.

But then there are people trying to sell pre facelift 09 cars for 10k+ at the moment so I guess we got a good deal.

Roadster market is messed up at the moment, but its coming to summer so we will hopefully sell the MK2.5 for what she paid for it. We buy any car want to give me £10k for my S2000 at the moment. Hilarious.

Yeah, he's selling his around the 12k region. I was contemplating selling mine as well given their value seem to be about the same as what I bought mine for 2.5 years ago. I even got an email from Mazda asking me if I want to sell/part-exchange mine because they didn't have enough second hand cars to meet demand.

I think it's just playing the waiting game really. People want cheaper roadsters. The ones I have been looking at for her have been for sale for a bit. Only if you sell well under market value are you getting a quick sale.

Her MK2.5 is up on autotrader at 2995 which makes it the cheapest by a long shot. But then its easier to shift a cheap mx5 close to summer than a 10k+ car (hopefully)

Took my RS to a track day at Oulton Park at the end of May - had a great time there and the first real opportunity to put the car through it's paces. Definitely appreciate it more than I had previously.

Not too much done to it apart from the stuff i'd already done (roll bar, suspension etc.) aside from changing the brake fluid to RBF660 (difficult to get RBF600 here). Stock pads held up surprisingly well.

Oulton was a great circuit - plenty of things to work on!

Quick one, I've installed a new single DIN headunit into my mk 2.5 MX5 and a cubby hole underneath. However, my radio unit doesn't "click" in anywhere and is just sitting in the hole, and bounces around. I can't seem to find a way to secure it. Do I need to buy an extra bracket or something?

As I recall there's usually has a cage that fits into the single din hole and the radio unit slots into the cage . . . . .

Something like this:

I read this article on car throttle this morning on 10 reasons why not to buy a mx5. As a mk1 owner i have had all of these thoughts run though my head at some point and i think its not a bad article. I completely agree with the statement that 'it doesn’t really excel in any area - except maybe value for money'

http://www.carthrottle.com/post/10-reasons-why-you-should-never-buy-a-mazda-mx5/

I'm interested to see if any other owners are on the same page, or are you offended by this article?

Offended, I might even write a letter.... :p

The article is not going down well on plenty of other places either...

Its a pretty pointless article, it all stems down to point 10, he doesn't like them and his colleague does and goes on about it all the time, so now he's made a big article ****ging off anyone who has an MX5, good one idiot.
