MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

I did another track evening at Teeside Autodrome last Monday, car performed pretty well aside from getting very hot after 8 laps or so.

Next one is the 8th August, 5-8pm for £35 if anyone fancies it?

Hmmmm, tempted to come down and use it as a shakedown for going over to the Nurburgring on the 11th....

Aha! An outlet for what weaned me off of computers when I was maturing... cars!

I had/have an MX5 - here it is in 2012:

A 1996 1.8i, manual steering, manual windows, property poverty spec. Loved it.

Here it is later that year:

I presume it's been turned into coke cans or something by now. If you drink tastes a little rusty you'll know why. Now, who can see where this is going?

Yup. A flat pack car. It was now a Westfield, with only the engine, drivetrain, brakes, wheels and wiring loom remaining from the MX5.

Then I got a little bit (more) carried away, and built a Mk2.5 bottom end with Mk2 top end engine (the VVT solenoid on the Mk2.5 wouldn't fit under the bonnet). I also fitted some GSXR throttle bodies.

This netted 165bhp. Then it got a little sillier.

It was now 260bhp. Then it got sillier again...

A 335bhp, 620kg orange bathtub. I have successfully made an MX5 even less practical :D

You are not making it any easier for me to resist going down the Exocet route with mine.

In fact I'm sure I recognise your Westfielfd from Nutz?

I was over at the Nurburgring from the 12th - 17th with my mate in our 5s and had a cracking time. Car performed great once again and came away with a new PB of 9:01 BTG. Gutted I didn't sneak under the 9 minute barrier but got held up in a few spots and is was my first lap out on our last day so the tyres and brakes weren't up to temp for the first few km. Was really busy throughout the whole trip but had some great fun playing with some fast and very expensive machinery. Scalp of the trip was catching and overtaking a Lamborgini Aventador LP750-4  He must have been gutted when I went round him on the outside :D
Need to decide what to do with it now as I really could do with more than 2 seats as our family grows but really don't want to have to sell it. A very reluctant sale may happen in the near future :(

Video of my fast lap (excuse the wind noise, an external mic for my GoPro is on the shopping list):

Thoroughly enjoyed that. :) Watching that points out to me what i found missing in Assetto Corsa - a sense of speed.

Cars gone in today to have the rusty rear arches sorted.
Yes, They still rust on a MK3.

Also got a clicking rear caliper as I progressively press the pedal harder, hoping it's just a slider pin, we shall see.

My MX5 also went into the garage today - getting the underside and chassis cleaned up and wax oiled in time for winter.

Also got a new drivers wing getting fitted as rust was coming through the old one. And I bought some chassis rail reinforcement which I'm hoping will strengthen everything up :)

So, winter is coming an all that. Can anyone recommend a good place for underseal around Harrogate/Leeds? Worst case i use mx5 motors in doncaster but would be interested if there was anyone closer?

Most threads i can dig up on the subject seem to relate to businesses no longer around

Not closer, but Carl at CBS autos in Nelson is about an hour away from Harrogate. He's very thorough!

On another note, is anyone from here going to the MX5 national Rally at Donnington this year?

Decided that since its free entry to owners club members I might as well have a look and see what's about.

After some info on MX5's.

Considering changing the GTV and an MX5 is a car which tempts me.

I'd likely be doing 8k miles in it a year, commuting 20 miles a day and it'd be for an occasional eurotrip too.

I'd like to keep the budget to about 4k. Which mark would you suggest for this budget/purpose, and what is there to know?

TIA :)

Finally got the rust arches sorted out. Only problem is the guy who did the work pointed out he went through 3 layers of paint during prep and that the car as a whole had been resprayed before in a wrong shade of red.

So on the plus side, there's no rust and it's a cracking job with the rough anti chip paint to hopefully help stop it happening again, but now there's a colour mismatch. I'll probably get it finished off and get the rest done when I have the cash.

Off to the national rally tomorrow, to no doubt spend more cash. So much for a cheap runaround!
