MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

I think I'd prefer a supercharged mx5 to a turbo one! Meh tempted to buy one!

I made the decision to go supercharger as I hoped for it to feel more like an MX5 with a bigger engine and I was happy with the power delivery as it pretty much delivered.

Just breaks too much!

I've decided. Buying a 4-2-1 or 4-1 manifold and getting it mapped. Probably shall use blink, may even enquire about their fitted package.

How much of a difference will it make?

My search continues but decided to buy something to use for track days for the rest of the year until winter as I have a bit more prep to do on my shell. Anyone know for anything?

Well turns out stock 1.8 clutches give up a bit above 10-11PSI. So time to order a Stage 3 Comp clutch.

Will - Should manage to get down to the post office and the filter on its way to you tomorrow :)

What power is that? Still trying to find a decent solution myself, used an OEM 1.8, an Exedy and a stage 3 fitted by BBR and hated them all.

Was looking through some datalogs last night, it was actually pushing just short of 13psi so somewhere around 260bhp at a guess and pretty close to the limits of the bottom end in terms of torque

Interesting, I keep reading people say a 1.8 standard clutch should be good for 210bhp, but mine slipped even before it was mapped to 220.

Still trying to work out if I get torque earlier as it's supercharged rather than turbo?

Possibly, peak torque for mine is 4500rpm. You will get the torque earlier but I'd have also though it would be lower at peak.

Looking through my logs and a bit of maths I was making about easily over 200ft/lbs and probably somewhere close to 230

Got it yesterday, thanks a lot :)

As I said before, PM me your paypal address and I can send you some money for the postage plus some beer money, otherwise I can make a donation to a charity of your choice if you didnt want anything for it, up to you!

With regards to your turbo, I'd keep the torque below 225lb ft if you can, beyond that and most Mk1/2 MX5s are at risk of bent rods, so goes the consensus on mx5 nutz....

I'd not intended to run at that sort of torque/boost, I'm having some major issues trying to get any result from using closed loop boost control. Did about 150 miles trying to tune it and no matter what I do i get huge oscillations in boost level and big spikes during spool.

Behaves really well in open loop so I'll keep it that way for now, then try it again with a new wastegate at a later date as closed loop is a lot more consistent when it actually works

So I've got the BBR suspension being fitted Wednesday. Is it worth upgrading the Anti roll bars once this is done, or does the updated suspension negate the need? Cheers.

Edit: Couldn't resist, grabbed some from eBay used for a fair price.

I cant imagine it could hurt, I have the bbr suspension on mine and its flat through corners and very responsive, almost overly responsive when I drive an astra as my other car! the only thing I don't like about the mx3 is the steering feel vs the mk2.

It's in at the moment having the suspension and cobalt anti roll bars fitted (£65 I paid for the ARB's which I thought wasn't bad) along with brake fluid and gearbox oil changes. I feel like a kid at Christmas to take it for a spin tomorrow.

This came for mine today (Pressure plate is still at the bottom of the box). Annoyingly its a couple of weeks till I have a weekend free to get it fitted.

I have a feeling the ~200 to ~240bhp jump is going to be a bit unwhelming compared to 140 to ~200 though

it won't be. 200 is good but the mid to late 200's is very different, the in gear acceleration becomes a big deal. mine can accelerate faster in 3rd/4th than my mk2.5 1.8 sport could in 1st

Had the car back and the difference is phenomenal.

Had to have all 4 droplinks changed as they were in a very poor condition and we're easy to do while fitting the ARB's. Corners completely flat and the ride is still actually rather forgiving over bumps in the road.

Theres no crunching of the syncros in the gearbox when cold anymore which is brilliant and I can't say I notice a blind bit of difference by changing the brake fluid, but I haven't driven it hard over the roaches yet.

Feels like a different car and no longer looks like a 4x4.

I'm like a kid at Xmas.

Should the gap in the arches be slightly bigger at the front when lowered or the same all round? It looks alright to me, I just assumed it was to accommodate the steering. I'll get a photo up when I figure out how to do it without it being the resolution size of Everest.

Mine is on the bbr suspension too and it looks a little low at the rear, with slightly bigger arch gap at the front. If you measure the frame rails however you'll find the car is in fact level...personally a bit of 'nose down' rake looks better and a lot of the mk3 race cars seem to be set up that way, but the bbr setup keeps the car level. Drives nicely on the road so I think I'll leave well alone. They will do some slightly longer rear springs if you do feel the need to change it mind.
