MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

Tried to drop you a message but was unable to send? I’d be really interested in taking your place as I’m off work on Friday and my original plans have moved to Saturday so now got the day free.

If you could drop me a PM or email via Trust that’d be great :)

When I posted that I was expecting a call the following day but it never came.

I'll try and drag out the details of the guy that called me and send them to you, give him a call and say you're interested in the new MX5 and see if he says anything? They seem to struggle for numbers because they do weekdays at late notice.

Quick video of a session from Lyneham. Video is quite loud, the sound is taken from the tow eye mounted camera. Get a bit twitchy a few times on the double apex left hander towards the end of the lap... great fun :)

Without watching is that a twin turbo LS?

Tbh I don't think I'll try and make any more than the current 300bhp, costs will start to get very silly very fast if I push it any further

Edit: Briefly flicked through it is an LS, I want!

So.....still on the hunt for a nice MX5 that I can use to run around in and also take to the track for some fun.

Looked at a few NB Mk 2 cars but it is shocking how many suffer from rust. Although I have found the odd one or two that are pretty much rust free, I worry that even those will go the same way after a few years of driving around in the wet :(

It is quite worrying when you see so many NBs that look great in photos and ahve been cared for mechanically, failing their MOTs due to rust and being broken for parts.

I then thought of getting a Mk 1, having owned a great R-Limited a few years ago. Definitely easier to find rot free ones of those compared to the NB but not sure it will make a good road going car these days due to lack of safety features.

Now, I am thinking of pushing my budget a little and seeing if I can source a half decent 6 speed 2.0 NC Mk 3.

As always, what started as a "good idea" to get a cheap car is now becoming more expensive :(

Interested to hear other people's thoughts on the above. Am I being paranoid about the NB cars ?

No, they are a risky business these days.

Mine looks okish but I got an advisory on my MOST last year for chassis rail rust.

That said my mate picked up a beautiful Mk2 that has a little bit of arch rust but is clean as hell otherwise. He paid £1,500 for 50k miles on a limited edition.

We opened our bonnets side by side, even his lower strut brace had factory paint versus my rusty example. Some guy had it in a garage for years.

Gave my one a quick clean yesterday and more importantly tackled the cat claw marks over the front and rear wings and bonnet. I think I've gotten to the bottom of the worst of it, a little regular run from my garage, over my fence then a leap onto the bonnet of the car. Some plastic spike strips seem to have put a stop to that and two ultrasonic deterrents to stop them sleeping on the boot and roof seems to have stopped the rest. Still £40 I had to shell out so the next door neighbours can have "Dexter" who they see for about 10 minutes a day

I'm hoping the weather stays mild so I can get a few more weeks in before the winter hibernation but traditionally they like to get out on gritting runs as soon as there is a heavy frost just to make sure everything is set for the first proper big freeze.

There's two ways of getting a good NB.

You either buy a cheap rotten as a pear example and spend £1500-£2000 putting full rear arch/sills and new chassis rails, or import one straight from Japan

Finished work early today so made a start on fitting my Eibach springs to my NC1. Front pair are changed; just need to bolt them on and do the rears in the morning.

So far it's been easier than I thought. Tomorrow will likely bring some pain tho.

By how much will the eibachs lower the car ?

Are the lowered eibach springs with the stock Bilstein shocks a good setup for the track ?

On the road, are they too hard ?

Designed to lower the earlier NC's by 35mm, later ones by 25mm. If tracking then decent anti-roll bars would be needed too.

I'm paring them with the standard black Mazda shocks. Although opinion is divided, the general gist seems to be that the Eibach springs work a little better with the standard shocks than with the Bilsteins.

I'll discover later how hard they are on the road.

Forgot to post a pic.

Mid 2007 2.0i Option Pack with 72000 miles on the clock.

Completely stock. Paid £3700 from a local dealer. Took her for a 130 mile run around the Antrim coast road on Friday afternoon. Appears to be running sweet as a whistle.

Cleaned the hood this morning and brushed on a good coat of Renovo Ultra Proofer.

Looking better now with the Eibach Pro springs

Is it worth the money as a track day? its really close to me so I've been umming and ahhing over to whether to give it a go in mine

Got to get mine ready for its outing at oulton park Friday.

This time I've got decent pads and fluid in so I shouldn't end up brakeless again.

Yep it’s not a bad price so worth it if close by. It doesn’t beat a proper track but still decent for an airfield. Heading to Bedford in a few weeks as they are cheap being out of season now (£99-120).

Pretty rubbish video, but best lap from my session at Silverstone on Sunday (Pistonheads Sunday Service). Battery pack we were using for video logger died, so nothing after pits on that :( Need to sort power socket out, plus a few other things to do before next track day. Car went well though, first time on track with it

Car survived it's Oulton Park outing. Didn't get brake fade once, I'm actually impressed with these Yellowstuff pads considering all of the bad press they receive online.

Two issues. 1, brake fluid leaks out of the reservoir when it gets increadibly hot. The cap isn't sealing correctly so I need to investigate that. 2, The tyres melted, so a spare set of wheels with track dedicated tyres are needed for next year.

Due to the thrashing it received, I'm leaning towards replacing the manifold and getting a map to get the little extra out of it n/a. I can't see it lasting long playing on the track if I strap a turbo to it.
