MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

Went for an hour or so drive in the small bit of sunshine that showed itself today. I came back just thinking what a great car it is (NC2). It may have a fairly boring engine note, and it could probably do with another 20hp, but it's just SO much fun to throw around B roads. I also love the new steering wheel.

That's it, until next time :p

...or even just the dry weather. I used to enjoy driving mine with the roof down when it was barely above freezing - hat, scarf, gloves, heated seats on and the heaters full blast, fantastic fun :)

The character of the car was so much better with the roof down - with it up, you just get lots of wind and road noise and it felt very claustrophobic...with the roof down, it's much more liberating. Enjoy :)

Completely agree, although my PRHT helps a lot with the wind noise I find.

I beat my record yesterday :p You can just see in the corner, my maxed out seat heater. It was great fun though :)

To be fair, if it's a decent journey with no stopping, even light rain is a roof down opportunity, as long as you don't drop below 40mph the rain goes over the top!

Steering wheel looks great! I understand Mazda wanted the MX5 to have an old english sportscar feel but the OEM steering wheel is so thin :(

Can I ask where you got the retrim done, what materials and how much?

I have hands like shovels!

Got my MX5 back out to play. My Clio has gone massively wrong and the MOT has still got some MOT on it so its back on the road.
Going to get it MOT'd asap.

It was done by royal steering wheels. Nappa on the top and bottom, perforated leather on the side, added thumb grips, made it thicker, and had the stripe put on the top. Cost 150 plus a 100 deposit refundable when you send yours back.

Just thought I should probably do the clutch on the 5' if I'm going to be running it for a while.
The bite point is literally the moment you press the pedal and it slips if you try to pull away quickly haha.

Has anyone got any experience of BBR GTI and their work? Once again I find myself contemplating having some work done on my wife's MX5 as she is adamant she doesn't want to change the car as it owes us nothing, has been faultless bar 1 sensor 6 months into ownership and frankly she still loves the little thing. It is a standard Mk3.5 Sport Tech 2L we have had from new and today sits with around 75K miles on the clock. My concern is tuning a car with that mileage, but knowing how under stressed the engine is I am not too worried but my thinking is perhaps an ultimate NA tune to around 225bhp or moving to a turbo conversion. Added to this would be a suspension refresh and some tightening of the chassis to remove some scuttle shake, but I don't really want to to turn it into some low down bump fest as the damping is so well sorted on the standard car.

I'd welcome any comments and experiences people have of this outfit?

They mapped my supercharged Mk2.5 Sport and got 198whp out of it safely, it's done 118k to 128k at mainly high boost, including track days with no issues engine wise.

I'd ring them and speak to them about the chassis, I found them easy to talk to and they understood what I wanted from my coilovers when setting them up and did exactly what I asked, dialling out some initial understeer of I got on the power early on boost.

I had Chris Franklin put a good set up on the MX5 when we first bought the car back in the day, of which the most impressive aspect was the amount of additional steering feel the car produced, it was transformational from that respect. The general road manners were improved, less floaty, but the steering was the big change. I have to remember it's a road car for my wife so I don't want to turn it into a compromised road car. My thinking is tighten it up a little and add power.

Best bet is try and get a drive of a BBR Super 200 and one of their FI cars too.

I would despise going back to an N/A MX5 now but they become a very very different car to drive

I think this is probably best. I will speak to them (I have spoken to them before) and arrange to go down and drive a couple of options.
