My 9800X3D Jonsbo D41 build

Agree, just not that dire usually, for washers I’ve only used 1mm or 2mm thick ones. Think with bottom intake you’ve got more leeway too as A) hot air is naturally moving towards top of the case and B) you’re running at a slower speed anyway to avoid fighting with the GPU’s fans. But agree that the above/getting the foam bracket things that Noctua does would be the ‘proper’ way.
 
i actually have my fans setup like this:


gives the CPU some clean air. Noctua recommends this for air and it does lower my CPU temps by a few degrees.

if i was AIO cooling, then obviously the top should all be extract.

Definitely needs a larger CPU cooler though ;)
....and an OCUK logo in the corner of your mouse mat, of course :D (mine's the desk-carpet size)

The stupid thing is the cooler is barely enough cooling for my CPU.

My mouse mat is actually those fast/smoothness/esports marketing crap, that I scammed myself into buying

Really?! I'm running a 9800X3D same as you (unless I've forgotten a post saying you upgraded to the 16-core version) and I'm running almost the cheapest cooler I could get (since I'm planning to watercooled it but wanted to test it) and it doesn't seem to be breaking a sweat. Even turn the fan profile down to silent. I think it's about half of your one!

Are you overclocking it? I'll admit I'm running it stock and I'm not exactly pushing it running stuff like Mass Effect 2 (although I did check out the tail end of Cyberpunk on it). Maybe it's the good ventilation by way of convection provide by my motherboard box professional test bench setup :D

Due to the process node being small and dense, plus thick IHS, cooling just can't pull the heat away as you maybe expecting.

See this graph for air cool vs water cooled, same settings in use. I went from lapped base ThermalRight SB-E X2 to my WC setup and all I gained was in high power situations CPU just does not throttle. All the HW I had it was just to see difference between each cooling setup.

I'm not sure that shows thermal throttling on that graph - or at least not related to the plotted temperature point as the temperature of the watercooled run is higher at that point and both are higher at other points on the run.

The temp is higher at that point, as power usage is sustained.

Never said CPU was thermal throttling, I was pointing at no throttle due to how power usage was, same settings in use for both test runs.

tbf, my fans are not optimal and very low RPM (flat fan curve). I'm also running it stock, 93c when precompiling shaders in FF7rebirth...
