Agree, just not that dire usually, for washers I’ve only used 1mm or 2mm thick ones. Think with bottom intake you’ve got more leeway too as A) hot air is naturally moving towards top of the case and B) you’re running at a slower speed anyway to avoid fighting with the GPU’s fans. But agree that the above/getting the foam bracket things that Noctua does would be the ‘proper’ way.
 
i actually have my fans setup like this:


gives the CPU some clean air. Noctua recommends this for air and it does lower my CPU temps by a few degrees.

if i was AIO cooling, then obviously the top should all be extract.
