Everyone is different. If it ends amicably I don't think I could imagine not staying friends with someone I cared so much about. Sometimes it can be harder to start with but it's better in the long run. Especially when the other person still cares about you just their feelings change.

Anyway for what it's worth I think you'll be ok and it will only be a matter of time before you find someone special. It will feel awful right now and for who knows how long, but it will get better.
