My brakes

How's the fluid level?

Anyone mechanically knowledgable you can call? If the pedal is going to the floor there is a serious issue and you WILL hit something. I know you have a disabled child to get about, but that won't really matter any more if you plough into a wall killing you both.

This isn't like a noisy bearing or blowing exhaust where you can get away with it for a while, this needs sorting.

Fluid level is right up to the top bar half a centimetre, I just went and checked.

My dad said if all that is normal (he only knows the basics about cars) it might be the servo? (whatever that is)

He got me to sit there and take the hand brake off with the foot pedal pressed down and the light goes out.

Wont be the servo. If you can press your foot to the floor the servo is working fine unless its making any hissing / other strange noises. Sounds like master cylinder or somewhere along those lines.

The servo aids your braking to make it easier to brake harder. Like power steerings for brakes really. If that helps to explain a bit

Nope not making any noises.
Is the cylinder going to be expensive if its that?

Not sure for your car but it should be around £50 to £100 at most i would have thought? Its the fitting and bleeding thats going to cost. Im not deffinatly sayings its this though as im still learning myself.

Um because im a girl and I havent got a clue about cars?

Knip, No offence but stop replying "Im a Girl"
I know plently of girls that know how to do things with cars and it ****es them off to hear girls use the excuse that they are a girl.
Just say I have no clue:)

Jacking a car up is Easy, It should even tell you how to do it in hand book that comes with the car.

Give it a read through and you will learn quite a lot more then you know now:)

I can do basic things like checking the oil etc, but when someone says pull it apart this afternoon and have a look?
Tbh most blokes wouldnt have a clue either, so I can see your point. Just frustrated that my car is sick.

seriously, think about the car's issue logically. on a sunday, unless you have got some good mates, no one is going to fix that apart from you

Er, folks, Knip's said that a DIY fix is not an option. And even if she wanted to learn, brakes aren't the best thing to do a first attempt on ;)

If there's not a fluid leak then next most likely thing is the master cylinder (imagine a syringe, that the rubber seal leaks so when you push the plunger in, instead of the fluid coming out the end of the syringe it comes past the plunger to the back). Another possible, although I suspect it isn't is one or more of the rubber hoses has started ballooning out instead of passing the fluid through to the brakes.

Your directline breakdown cover should be able to tow you upto 10 miles to a garage, I'd give them a call and get it taken somewhere, for better then trying to drive it somewhere with no brakes :o

But if its a brake cylinder, I can hardly just pop down the supermarket, throw one in the back of the car and hey presto its fixed can I?

its hardly like you can drive it to a dealer either and get a part

sounds like youd need to start by bleeding the hydraulics and then maybe working out why it went wrong, if it goes wrong again.

with the engine off, can you still push the pedal to the floor?

I cant do that because I wouldnt have a clue where to start and wouldnt want to break my car further! Which part of that do you not get?

Yes it still goes right down.

Knip, no offence but theres no need to be so defensive. You've come in here asking for help and you've got it. However, expecting people to know your gender/mechanical experience, and getting defensive when they down know those facts is a little bold.

Fact of the matter is that if you aren't mechanically minded and you don't know anyone who is, then it is likely you will need to get this seen to, especially if you need parts.
