My Crashing r9 290 thread.

I'm having similar problems with a VTX3D R9 290 "X" Edition card. Lots of freezes and a few lockups. Installed a 120mm fan in the bottom of the case blowing upward onto the gfx card which has reduced the frequency of freezing, but it still happens. I have an OCZ ZS series 750W PSU but having looked on the VTX3D website it says that's the minimum PSU for the card? Do you guys think a new PSU would help? MilanoChris - have you found a solution yet?

I have a VTX3D R9 290 and am in the same boat. Try allowing the fan in CCC to scale to 60% and drop the RAM speed to -20% if this fixes / improves things you probably have dodgy graphics ram , so return to supplier and hope for a better one next time.

Your PSU should be fine as its not a super cheap one :-)

Think I would send it back myself. But that's just me.

Read another thread that your processor doesn't support PCI Express gen 3, even though you have Gen 3 motherboard. Not that it should matter in regards to your problem.

If your card's are staying under 95C, then they're working as they're meant to and AMD have said there's no issue with running at that temperature for the life of the card. Obviously, at that kind of temperature the exhausted air will smell hot, but as long as your card's running 90C-94C it's officially nothing to worry about.

from my gaming last night this seems to be spot on,

Running bf4 on one screen and msia on the other and watched the card hovering @ 94-95c

being the div that i am once i had finished i powered up the fans to cool the card and then dropped it back to 20% (which i shouldnt have done) and then the machine promptly rebooted but all in all it seems quite stable now.

@ si mats, the new psu was the best solution for me and worked a treat, i had an 880 watt psu and that didnt cut the mustard, i would certainly look at going for a new psu as you are only just about meeting the requirements of the card, as these guys have said its a sound investment and can never do any harm.

i will now look @ ronsons idea of setting my own fan curve to keep the card cooler., Thanks ronson, i learn a bit more each day :)

Many Thanks to all of you as you have been a great help as always.

im sure i will be bobbing around with more questions as this is the time of year the fishing rods stay in the cupboard and i do some hardcore pc upgrades and gaming.

Happy New Year to you all :D

you're welcome.

i don't know about others but 90-95c is extremely hot for me,scary temps lol.well scary if like me you are thinking of the lifespan of the card :)

not sure if yours would do it but my 6970 hit 95-100 once due to me forgetting the fan was set to the default 20% and i'd been tweaking and forgot to activate the fan curve i'd set,at those temps i started to get black graphical artifacts on my screen and that sort of stuff.instantly reaslied what i'd done, looked at msi at and my temps were 95-100c and the green graph line had changed colour to yellow basicly informing me i was about to implode lol.

if you download furmark you will be able to test and tweak the fan with out ALT + tabing in and out of games

My fan settings keeps my cards at or below 90c going full whack in bf4/farcry 3. Two cards in crossfire as well so anyone with a single card can expect much lower temps. Changing the paste knocks 3-5c off as well. (so ive heard :p)
I found running a single card temps were 5-10c lower. Fan speed around 55-59% on both cards. Similar to my Ice-Q fans at 60-70%.

Guys just a quick thank you to you all my machine seems to be running fine now and no smells lol,

my fan is stepped @ 10 degrees by 10 percent and i havent had any lockups or crashes since last week and i now love my 290 :)

Many thanks for your help and instruction during my times of frustration.

Well they are built with these temps in mind, so I don't see why it would be a problem.

Case cooling makes a huge difference. A single side fan in my case reduced my 7990 temps by 5C. Dumping most of the heat into the case (of course depending on cooling solution) is not great.

Indeed. My 290's with a low speed fan profile run just over 5C warmer than my 7990 did, but are about 15-30fps faster. My 7990 had zero stability problems at these temps and neither do the 290's. If you're going AMD reference Hawaii you just need to accept that if you want a quiet fan profile you'll see temps in the high 80's to low 90's. Once you get over this hurdle its fine and you can just sit back and enjoy a nice gaming experience. I no longer fret if my gpu core is running at 75c or higher. In fact i stopped this when i got a 7990.
