My first car

Referring to rear wheel drive i assume then ?

Not just that, the MR2 is rear engined and the Revision 1 had very unforgiving handling. Mike on here has had MR2's since the dawn of time and will I am sure be happy to explain more.

They had a tendancy to just... snap and you are facing the other way without the usual warning you get that you are exceeding the limits IIRC.

Either way its a pretty poor choice of first car.

I thought they were mid engine cars?

Shows how much I know. :(

This'll end in tears :(

That's a fiesty back end you got there fella. I've been looking at rev 3s for quite some time. It's my next car (I'm 24).

Awesome, awesome, awesome first car mate. Congrats, looks very tidy. Just go easy, and drive like a granny in the wet. These cars are a serious handful. People are referring to the fact that it's a RWD, mid-engined car that had a serious suspension change in later revisions because of it's tendency to suddenly **** you mid-corner, especially with any lift-off or (rediculously stupid) breaking.

PS. I'm jealous :D That quote is stonkingly good.

Ant

Insurance is a bit steep! I'm the same age as you and paying about £700 or £800 I think for insurance on mine. Thank god for 4 years NCD!

It might be worth having a look at the owners club, they have a few articles on handling

http://mr2oc.co.uk/know-your-2/13-mr2-handling.html

If you've just passed you probabaly won't be planning on driving like a loon everywhere, but if you got for a spirited drive without knowing how the car reacts it might catch you out. Even knowing the characteristics it's still possible to be caught out as well, but knowing why it happens might help a bit.

Hope you enjoy it, I've had mine for a few months now and love driving it :)

Well I know nowt about them but its quite shocking to hear of mid engned car handling like a turd. I thought that was the hole point of having a mid engine, lol.

It handles well. Then it lets go. Then you're facing backwards. The bit that's missing is the bit where the car is going to tell you when it's going to let go. So I've read.

Its a very good quote for someone with 0 driving experience and 0 NCB, I would say what you are paying is quite steep. I am 23 with 5NCB, I can get insured <£300, acctually cheaper than my ST24 to insure. If I remember rightly it was about £427 to insure an MR2 last year.

Could be because of the differnce in what people have in cars between Australia and the UK but down here plenty of people have RWD cars as there first car and manage to not kill them selves, Even those real **** head drivers:p
You also get plently of people advertising MR2s as a "Good first cars" Seem to be Rev 1s mostly as well. :p

Just take it easy to start with and get used to the car and learn how to corner it and dont belt around like a mad man doing 100mph everywhere and you will be fine:)

Ive never found RWD cars scary or "cars of death" at all TBH.

You guys have some of the worst rates of accidents amongst young people of any developed country :p

I was buzzing about in a import other week, had some fun but way to uncomfortable for a fella of my size, was knocking indicater's/fog lights/wipers the lot with my knees haha

Its the 25-30 year olds which do it! and the **** head drivers you see with the rear suspension dropped in there commos:p

There are a fair few people that push past the limits. But you can do it in any car once you get it moving:p
I managed it in a 80bhp subaru down a dirt track:o

In the end its all down to how well you know the car and how you drive it. Push any car too hard and it will bite you in the arse.

I dont think Australia has to worry to much about the climate having a big say in the cars handling ;)

Good choice though, certainly better than the usual 1.25 fiesta first car experience.

It depends where you are from.

We arnt just one big giant Deset you know:p

It seems like every time ive been out for a drive lately the roads have been wet or its raining.

I don't think I'd pay that much for insurance on anything (unless I won the lotto) which is why I'd say it's steep, but I guess you're right, it's not bad for a new driver to insure a sporty car. I thought my quote was pretty good as I was paying about the same to insure my 1.6 Astra which was 10 insurance groups lower and worth less and with a higher excess.

Every time I went to a mountain it RAINED!!!122

My point exactly:p

Although at the moment we are in a draught we still get a fair amount of rain and hail depending on where you live.
If you live in the middle though then there is almost no chance of that happening

Thats a great car mate, congrats. Just take it easy like others have said.

You also, whether you knew it or not, have a great engine in there.

Presuming its a N/A 2.0L UK model, you'll have the 3S-GE. This engine is bullet proof and will run to 200k and many more if it has been well serviced and looked after. By the looks of it, if the last owner took so much care over the body work, he/she will have taken great care of the engine too.

I have a 3S-GE in my Celica GT and it serves me well. 171 bhp (173PS) @ 7000 rpm, 137 lbft @ 4800 rpm.

So drop that into a MR2 and your gonna have loads of fun!

Enjoy
