So, How bad would you say I did...

I drove on the industrial estate fine, I drove on the main road with other cars fine. I stalled the car at the traffic lights, And parked up fine every time.

This was my first lesson, Not too much traffic on the roads to be honest.

I know from what I've described It's probably hard to say how I did, but how were you on your first driving lesson?

I was absolutely terrified. Seriously.

1 stall, and not hitting the pavement while parking up must be a good sign.

It's just right now, I honestly feel like I'm not going to beable to pick it up. Clutch control is beyond me, Going round a corner, While going into second gear, and indicating and accelerating.... HOW.

Anyways, Moan over. Someone tell me they totally messed up their first lesson, So i can feel better.

This thread can be expanded to find out how people did on their first driving lessons, Aswell as letting me have a ramble, So Dons, Give it a chance :p

Lol, add fiddling with the radio, talking to your lass and swearing at other (BMW) drivers at the same time too :D.

You did fine, especially to only stall once. Not bad going at all.

My first lesson was not bad, covered all the basics with some steering exercises etc and the same, driving around an industrial estate. I'm fairly lucky I sorta nailed clutch control pretty quickly, once you do that everything else seems to come I think.

After practise it all feels like a second nature.

I've been driving for 3 years next month, and I do all the above without even thinking about it. With some more lessons under your belt, I'm sure the same can be within your grasp.

Stick with it. :)

Sounds good so far. Get out on L plates in your rents cars as much as you can!!! Nothing makes up for time spent on the road.

Ive done 8 hours 4 x 2 and im still getting the hang of clutch control though i do have the corner/gear change thing down

Cheers for the good luck comment guys. And I never thought of putting this in the Motors section, I guess it kinda belongs here :D

I guess I'm just the kind of guy who wants to beable to sit in a car and drive.

I've been the same with everything, I remember when I first picked up a C++ book, I wanted to jump to the back pages.

I just can't wait till I stop feeling so panicky. :)

Thats a very good idea, Only it would be my brothers car. And I'm scared of it. :p

he's just had a 1.6 engine put into his little Corsa. Maybe a bit too much power for an L plated car :D

I was just driving around and around a couple streets on my first lesson. 2nd lesson i drove from my house all over the place. I used to hate using the clutch, i always wanted a auto. Now i love having a manual.

Sounds good to me. I know I stalled it a few times (couldn't understand the instructor when he was telling me about getting it to the biting point as I didn't know wtf he was on about - all changed though when I changed instructors).

It was hard to get used to, especially when you go on the dual carrageways you have to have eyes everywhere.

I did pass my test almost three years ago first time. I remember before the test going out for the lesson and completley frigging up the reverse parallel park. The instructor said right before the test 'if you drive like that you'll fail'. That sort of made me want to pass more because of him - lol. A hour later with 3 minors job done.

Just wait until you're in the car on your own! The first time is when it gets scarey!

Good luck though as the others have said it was your first lesson and it's a start - give it a few more and you won't even think about driving.

Just talk to your instructor a lot. If you feel they are doing something wrong, tell them. I told mine i had driven a mates car and within 5 minutes of talking i was doing 60 on B roads! Very scary. they can tell if your a natural though, you sound like you'll do great and pick it up fast.

I'll second the view that first time you get in a car alone its VERY weird. Being able to boot it and do what you want and go ANYWHERE is fun. Just don't right your mates' mums car off!

Give it a few lessons, you'll pick it up.. only advice we can give you is don't run before you walk, as soon as you get what your feet are doing, everything else will fall into place :)

I find that starting to drive a different car reminds me of the paranoia in lessons with hitting the kerb etc... still getting used to my new one and my parking needs sorting out - will come in a few weeks I reckon :D

You did great mate. My first (2hr) lesson I got taken on the A13 after an hour.. was bricking it

i say u done better then average, the best thing is not 2 get bog down, dont expext much quickly take ** time try and enjoy urself.
every1 is diffrent dont compare urself with any1 else

My first lesson with the instructor was an assessment lesson (had previously drove before, without instructor just a mate next to me), so just drove one of the test routes, and done bay parking, second lesson (the other day) I stalled it once, after putting it in third and not first :(

How did your instructor think your driving was?

I had a mental block that made me keep putting it in 3rd instead of 1st when doing lessons. Took a while to shake off.. I think all the pee taking from my instructor helped to get rid of it :D

As qualified drivers it's great fun to reminisce about how awful we were when we started out. Passing your test is only the beginning - wait until you drive in central London at rush hour for the first time.

It all came flooding back to me when I tried to learn to fly an aeroplane. I said to my instructor, "you seriously expect me to land the plane, keep a lookout, use the radio, listen to you shouting at me, move the flaps, work the rudder, use the throttle, watch the speed, trim, maintain separation and monitor altitude all at the same time? That's impossible!".

What will happen is that (just like the flying and most other skills in life) basic things (changing gear, steering, etc) will start to become second nature. That gives you the spare brain capacity to worry about what other people are doing, navigate, change CDs, talk on the phone, etc :p.

Keep at it and have fun :).
