My first driving lesson

[BigHead Mode ON ]

Car test

In Australia I had ONE lesson before test (Was supposed to have more but the barsteward never turned up..passed anyway).

In England I had two lessons - Passed
Motorcycle test - Passed first time (Got told you read the bl00dy highway code when I got my new license though)

Truck test.. Failed first one.... But that was because I had a right numpty "co-learner" useless at going forwards.. He took all the time and I got five minutes at the end practising reversing.

Come test day I overcooked the steering on the reverse and as it had no power steering I just couldn't pull it back before cab ran over yellow line by one inch... Instant Fail. :-(

Sounds like you did ok for your first lesson.
Pay no mind to me.. It was a different world back then.. And I used to go "Bush-Bashing" anyway in my old cheese's car. (1975)

Look behind our house being built in 1973 ...It's all bushland <----clicky

Tis weird trying to give advice RE: Clutch control, as is second nature now and most don't even think about it.

Take your time and don't expect to learn everything all at once and you'll do fine.

I've been through the usual clutch control problem (think stalling 7 or 8 times at a busy high street junction...horrible). Anyway, what people say about getting used to it is very true, but I started thinking this way, and improved a lot. Do try it, but maybe it's not something everybody will take to:

1) Depress the clutch and select first gear (as you do).

2) Put your foot on the accelerator - not too little, not too much. At the right amount, leave it there and don't move it.

3) Gently take your foot off the clutch. The car will move forward. Remember to smoothly let go of the clutch...shake it and the car will jolt accordingly.

I've left out details about the handbrake/biting point...you'll just get used to it. What I found helpful was going somewhere quiet and flat in a parent's car, then releasing the handbrake completely and doing the above steps. I found it to be a pretty good way of getting a feel for the clutch and understanding how it works.

Additionally, it can be worth it if you get the (best and) biggest possible engine for your first car. I hardly drove for around a year after passing my test, and then jumped into a 2.0l-plus German car. The clutch was incredibly easy to control and I had the best drive of my life.

My first lesson went swimmingly but that was nearly 3 years ago. I didn't stall once but the next few lessons I stalled quite a few times. I'm gona do my test next month, kept putting it off by not doing all my lessons in close proximity, time and place wise. My instructor's letting me drive on the motorway at least which is the point I wanted to get at

My first lesson was brilliant i thought, probably because my instructor was just observing really, it was the next few lessons where he started tightening the screw and really kicking my arse for any mistakes i made. Has easily paid off, first test was on monday there and only got 4 minors for stupid daft wee things, all in the first couple of minutes out of sheer nerves. On the corner reverse i made a total mess of it and hit the kerb, fail straight away. Second test booked, going for a perfect 0 minor test, i wont be nervous as i know there is nothing to be nervous about, so i should be fine :)

I stalled a lot too to start with, and even get anxious if I knew i'd have to stop on a hill. The way I got over it was to go to the steepest hill in the area and practice setting off, a lot (surprised my clutch still works tbh :p). Practice makes perfect, and before too long I could pull away without using the handbrake and not rolling back and the whole clutch anxiety thing went away. Still managed to collect a minor on my test for stalling though:o

The problem with learning clutch control is learners do it the wrong way round.

The bit that doesn't matter they gently gently ..oh so slowly let it out.. (the bit you can just let out fast) and where it bites they just let go of it instead of easing that bit out and balancing it with more power.

Doh!

Perhaps they should introduce a clutch mechanics lesson ?

It's just right now, I honestly feel like I'm not going to beable to pick it up. Clutch control is beyond me, Going round a corner, While going into second gear, and indicating and accelerating.... HOW.

Dont worry about it... its like everything... it takes time!

I remember thinking the exact same after a lesson or 2, thinking to myself ill never be able to do everything at the same time! Like taking a round about, indicating off, changing gear and checkin mirrors seemed undoable!

But once you get used to it, its 2nd nature...! :) One thing i would say tho, as soon as you feel more able on the road, get insured on a parents car or something, and drive as much as you can!

Even stick to maneuvers in the instructors car, and just use parents for simple practice! It gets you more use to the road, positioning and other drivers... gets your confidence up :)

Practice makes Perfect! :P

You're driving instructors letting you (A learner) drive on the motorway? That's not illegal, stupid or dangerous in anyway... Unless you mean A roads?
