My first football assignment tomorrow, slight collywobbles! Advice appreciated.

Haha, it was fun, challenging I must admit trying to not chase the ball but chase the player instead.

Lighting was very dull and conditions crap, some shots look ok though and the paper/club seemed to like the shots. Will try it a few more times to hone skill, with hope of covering the local League 1 team via the paper, then who knows! Doing it more as hobby, but seems like a great way to network generally.

Key challenges I thought were trying to second guess erratic movement, without just resorting to praying and spraying at 12fps and where to position around the pitch. Headers it seems best to pray and spray at the moment!

400mm is a great focal length as it reaches both ends, I was able to shoot the team's keeper for example and crop in fine.

Ended up using single AF point with expansion of 8 points and Case 4 with Canon's new AF system, towards the top of the AF matrix in portrait mode, which seemed to work quite well. AF lock of the 400 is stupidly fast.

The best thing is that worrying about ISO is almost irrelevant with the 1Dx!

If you click on the link in my sig you'll be able to see my work from the weekend (latest gallery) For the first half I was sat at the half way line with my 70 - 200 with 1.4x extender (first time this year) the shots are ok but nothing spectacular. In the second half I changed to behind the Arbroath goal sitting inline with the 18yrd box and although I misfocused for the goal (with your camera i would have sprayed and prayed :p) the shots overall have a better look to them especially with the double header and consequent saves by the keeper. I even managed to get a few shots of our keeper although they're not cropped that much.

I've been asked again to cover the Brentford youth team this Saturday.
It's away at Brighton so maybe the football skill gap won't be so wide this time!

Made some changes to kit, the 300 f4 is replaced by a 300 f2.8 and the 40D is now a 7D.
The weather looks to be dull but dry and I should make it back in time to watch the 1st team at home. Once again, thanks to those sharing their expertise in this thread.
