With thanks to SiriusB's SMP guide, allow me to present my first Linux SMP Benchmark...

Project: 2604
Core: GROMACS SMP
Frames: 100

Avg.Time / Frame 11mn 58s 2117.88 ppd

Is that in the right ballpark for an E6700?

Ah, good, I shall let it chug away for a couple of days and then do a bit of Orthos work on it.:)

It's at 3.2ghz at the moment, but it's on water and I just got some of that Geil DDR2 800 that was on offer, so I shall do a little tweaking in the next few days. It's been to 3.6Ghz before but was unstable due to the cheapo DDR2 667 I had.:)

I notice that VMWare doesn't use 100% of the CPU when it's running, does Native Linux use 100%?

Interesting, I'll see how it goes, the deadlines look OK, even if I switch off for 6 hours a day the WU is done in a day.

Do you run a new VM with another Linux in for the 2nd client?

Nope, you can just copy two of the files from the first clients folder and then re-run the InstallService script.

Or something like that, been ages since I did it.

Nah you can run two clients in one VM. The extra client needs an extra ~200mb of RAM.

3.2GHz... how many frames has that WU done?

Just checked my benchies on my [email protected]

Min. Time / Frame : 10mn 28s - 2421.40 ppd
Avg. Time / Frame : 10mn 35s - 2394.71 ppd

up to 300PPD more than you!

I'm upto 2203.83 now after 14 frames. Did you use the default 499Mb for the RAM settings on the VM?

Hmmm, the 0.1Ghz sounds attractive.:)

I'll do my tweaking before setting up the second client.

As always, thanks for the help.:)

If you are on water another 100MHz should be easy!

And yeah, I would wait until you have finished the WU before you believe your benchies!

I've done loads of 2604s :)

There is a problem with Intel releasing the new E2xxx and E4xxx CPUs... means my spreadsheet for the foldy competition is out of date :p

I have done a little Orthosing and at 3.4Ghz I am now getting:

10:33 a frame at 2402.27 Ppd.

A gnats whisker better, and more Orthosing to come.

As a side note I presume the reason I can't find the shared folder on the Ubuntu install is I rather stupidly called my PC and Ubuntu install the same?

A little update, under native Ubuntu:

I think I might just go cry now :p :D

Actually since I'm now on a wired network again maybe I'll give dual-boot a spin, my GPU has been complaining a bit recently so I've had to clock it down :(

Damn 3.4!

Going to have to get my E6600 up a notch or two :p

Don't like these 1385 pointers! Running two clients and both have them. Only a combined 2000PPD :(

That's my Orthos stable limit at the moment without upping the VCore to silly levels, boots happily at 3.6Ghz but scared of upping Vcore. I'm running the units with -oneunit as I am experimenting to get the most out of my m/c.

My next experiment is to run Linux in VMWare, without the GUI and remove all the non-essential services.
