My first rig project :D

Here's how I've closed it up.
Small power head to mobo is running along the back and then up at top left. Its a stretch but Im pretty sure its ok.
I guess you can see what I've done with the 24pin
All spare PCIs are under optical (not in picture)

Thanks for your reply Raikiri.

I got some of these issues ironed out now, i.e. no longer worrying that I'd busted some part of the mobo.

I am interested though, why / how will fliiping the PSU help with those things. Don't want to think about recabling just now tbh :)

Also another thing I sorted was flickr, my LAN connection is just sio slow it timed out. I grabbed a spare wireless nodule and now thats fine though,.. I'll have to buy one of my own

Uh yeh, am I missing a bolt thing there on the outside of the case, middle right?

@Tibbz, ah yeh ofc it is...
GPU is going in/purcahsed when the series 7 is released and theres some good offers on the go.
Currently trying to test the integrated GX against the stem server, but its taking soooo long to DL red alert 3
I'm at a loss with the cable management tbh. Im pretty sure that ther're routed most logically, but maybe I need some ties to tidy it up?

Here's how it is presently;

All the pcis are bundled under the optical. The rest of the cables are stored / running through the hard drive bays, including the one thats linked up to the fans etc etc on the opposite side.
That 'HD Audio' one bugs me... just hovering above the PSU, its got the Ac37 header next to it, which as far as I understand is redundant.

Word of advice. Look inside the post the inside of your case thread in case central - stickied. There will no doubt be someone with a z9 with better cabling, so you will be able to look at how they've done to to possibly make yours look neater.

It's not always about the most logical (shortest) route, to make stuff look tidy.

Good advice, much appreciated!

I know that already though

Ive had my computer going for a few months now and all is well (mostly).

A few things I could use some help with;

When I switch it on, it switches itself off before starting again. No idea why, doesn't seem to be an issue but I'd like to know why. It started doing this after I opened her up and re-jigged some cables.

Are all the SATA ports on the Asus P8Z68 the same speed?

Are certain SATA cables different speeds? I read in one of the many manuals I've acquired that 2 of the supplied cables were 3Gb/sec and the other 2 were 6 Gb/sec - there was no way to tell apart though. Maybe I misunderstood but I'd like to know that I've got it right.

I want to invest in a mid range GFX card now. Any pointers? My price range is £200 max (though I'd spend a little more if there was a clear winner).

I could probably answer these questions myself but I wanted to post something on here. I've got some other questions but I've got to get back to work now!

Yo.
She's still holding well after 10 months, though I still haven't upgraded with a dedicated GXF and therefore still not poom ting enough for the gaming experience I want. Been busy this year moving house so its taken back stage.
Anyway, GFX card I'll decide upon and purchase end of december. I was really hoping for some advice as to any minor tweeks / upgrades I can make this month to make her even more poom ting for when the GFX lands.
I'm thinking upgrade to 16mb ram?

Any other suggestions?

*cough*GB*cough*

whats this mean?

yup I asked on another thread with this query and, again, I got some useful ideas.

What I'll do over the next 2 months is add an ssd for win7 and games, as well as the gpu. This and a bit of learning / overall tweeking of the system should result with the pc I set out to build.

More pics to follow :)

Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT128M4SSD2) £85.99
Total : £94.69 (includes shipping : £7.25).
looks like Im going for this. will decide on the gpu end of december

My Pc started occassionally having to double boot (shutting down a few seconds after power on), it stopped it for a while but started again recently.
Thinking I should take another look at cpu settings, which I hadn't done for six months, I somehow managed to put cpu voltage to 1.500 (way too high, it should around 1.35?)
Anyway got the BSOD twice, before making what I think are ok adjustments and I just wanted to check as I'm not that familiar with this side of things.

In asus pz68 board bios with a i5 25k;
By all cores; 45
Cpu voltage; 1.224
Dram; 1.671

The bottom two figures are what I wanted to check, there set in 'auto' mode, do these look correct?

I switched some other settings in the bios as was recommended by a highly liked yuotube video that was with the same board and chip.

Stress test with prime95 for and hour and a half and top temp. I got was 96deg. I was checking with core temp too, but most of the stats in these aren't very useful cos I don't understand!

Oh and it seems that the 'double boot' problem is fixed.

thanks for your reply and sorry if you found it difficult to understand my grammar.

im aware that o/c'ing will make little or no difference to the onboard gfx. i'll be purchasing a dedicated card soon tho and the extra hertz will then be coming in handy. also i spent the extra cash on the 25k and a decent cooler specifically so i could learn about and overclock my system.

i didnt know about the fans; when i get home i'll check this out, and no doubt I'll be switching at least one around (there's 5 in total).

following what you've noticed about the ram voltage, I'll set the bios to the back to the auto o/c facility. please note; this ram voltage was set automatically and not by me, presumably based on what I'd set the multiplier too.

also 95 degrees was the top temperature of one core whilst being stress tested by prime 95.

thanks for taking a look and ill see what i can about those cables. the bloody cables were actually the most testing part of building it!

Thanks!

Good spot of that cable, it is still there at the moment and I will fix it soon.

You didn't miss the gcard, there's not one even there right now. A new card and ssd are what I'm going to put in next month, and Im hoping this will make it a worthy gaming setup.

Yup, the cables need sorting too. I took a look at the gallery and there's some very neat setups. There's so much cable in there I barely knew what to do with it. Half of it is shut away behind the motherboard and side panel. - I can only imagine this is where the cables have gone to in some of the photos, some of them I cant see any cables at all :s

after feedback I got, I made some adjustments in the bios.

multiplier now 38.
ram 1.35 volts.
idel temps are maxing at 28deg.

also there's a setting in there called 'cpu capacity'. it was set at 130%. Ive put it down to 100% to be safe.

got a long free weekend ahead, so ill be tinkering a bit more and be posting some more questions i imagine.

nice1, comments / advice much appreciated!

ended up spending long weekend back at my rents, so my quality time with my pc is still on the 'to do' list (im actually writing this from work :D )

more to follow...
