well guys as a long time avoider of rpg type games i've been tempted by this new skyrim game, it looks pretty and everyone seems to rate it so i'm tempted.

would you guys recommend it for a rpg noob? or should i look at something a bit less taxing to break me in?

Oblivion was the first RPG I was really in to, and found it very easy to learn things. Skyrim is, in effect, a far more polished, streamlined Oblivion, which is by no means a bad thing.

Skyrim has to be the best choice for an RPG newbie now due to how streamlined and easy to play the game is (not a bad thing, only the UI is terrible :p).

It doesnt have huge spreadsheets and tables that need to be understood, you simply learn as you play the game.

I would still go for oblivion first, it is very very easy to understand. After skyrim you may think oblivion is not good enough, but believe me oblivion is well worth playing it is a very good RPG.

Dito although it did take me a while to get used to oblivion, after playing it i fell in love and now i'm a avid fan of rpg's.
Really enjoying skyrim so far.

I would also reccomend dragon age origins, dont go near the sequel.

Haven't played Skyrim but I would imagine it makes a good starting point, personally when attempting a new genre for the first time I would always recommend modern games (providing they are highly rated of course) as they tend to be more streamlined and easier to get in to. Then once that's out of the way you can explore back-catalogues from Bethesda, Bioware etc.

Ok played 30 mins last. iChat and I feel so underwhelmed :(

Combat feels clunky graphics set on high with a 6970 look poor overall first impression it's not that good

BUT

I'm going to give it another hour or so this afternoon and see if it picks up any

I shall report back later :)

Did you go for Oblivion or Skyrim? Skyrim graphics are far from poor on ultra!

Oblivion graphics are of course a bit dated, but once you get Qarl's texture pack on there it's better than some current gen games that have been released recently.

I must have started obliivon about 5 times, done the first oblivion gate and then got side tracked with different things...the game is so big, if for some reason you start getting tired of doing something there are tonnes of other stuff to do :)

Throw a few mods on it and you are away :)

I did 15 hours on my first oblivion play through before seeing Jauffre for the first main story quest you can do when getting outside. I was just messing with the guilds and side quests.

I played Morrowind and really didn't get it, there was no tutorial or any guide to say go here and do this. I spent the whole day walking around a village trying to figure out what to do before I went on a killing spree and uninstalled the game lol
