Hi,

Shocked here at my mpg...almost crying infact.

In the last week ive done 251 miles from full to empty (light had been on for about 3miles) i managed to cram 49 litres in the tank @ 95.9p litre.

Sooo....

Avg MPG - 23.2MPG
Averaging - 18.7pence per mile
12,000 miles will cost me £2244 even at todays cheapish rate of 95.9p per litre.

This is the site ive used to calculate my figures for me
http://www.torquecars.com/tools/uk-mpg-calculator.php

The upsetting part is ive been driving steady this week as my tracking was out, (you may remember a post i made about the passenger side of my tyre been bald as they come). Can only hope fuel consumption will increase dramatically now ive got the tracking done.
Majority of my journeys are longish ones, drive to work is 30mins each way mainly on dual carrigeway 40/50/60mph speed limits with little traffic as its 7.30 in the morn.

Anyone else got any figures theyd care to chuck in for comparason?

Thanks, Russ

I get about 370 - 400 miles to a tank on my 1999 1.6 Focus....about 37MPG I think?

I'd guess its poor tracking that's causing the problem, if the wheels are slightly toe in or toe out.

Has it ever been that bad before?

I've been getting between 25-30mpg out of my Fiat Coupe Turbo, with a mixture of steady cruising on dual carriagewyas and thrashing it through the B-roads. 23mpg does seem poor, but if a lot of the mileage has been in city type traffic then it would make more sense. It's also possible your car has a problem such as a dead/dying lambda sensor, or leak in the exhaust manifold/downpipe. Duff tracking certainly won't have helped, it pushes the rolling resistance up quite a bit.

Jees, you must have been ragging it

I usually get 350miles out of my ST170... about 30~ mpg I guess.

its never been brilliant on fuel no, but i put that down to going from a 1.2 to a 2.0.

i usually put around £35 worth of fuel in, never used to brim the tank although i have started to brim it lately purely to work out the mpg. Think i used to get around 220miles from £35 worth of fuel, which was anywere from 3/4 full tank to nearly full depending how empty it was when filling.

how do i tell if a lambda sensor is dying? any tell tale signs?

As i said majority of journey, prob 2/3s is dual carrigeway with a few round abouts but thats it, last 10mins is town/30mph roads but theyre usually fairly clear in the morn, little bussier at night but by no means stand still.

I used to use a b road route to work daily but started using the dual carrigeways to try and get better fuel economy as i would always find myself playing (and ending up getting to work too earli lol)

my golf usually takes 43L to fill up. i get 300 miles everytime.

what are your tyre pressure like now that theyre tracked right?

tyre pressures are dot on what they should be, they get checked weekly normally or fortnightly occasionally

The engine management light will come on.

You not caning it off of each roundabout are you?? :p

car only hesitates a little below 2000rpm but by all accounts this is a charecteristic of the engine.

lol dont normally give it any at the round abouts, although i did make exception to a 4x4 earlier who was glued to my bumper and giving me verbal/beeping horn/flashing lights as i let some out of a junction, so as he tried to cut me up on a roundabout i showed him his 4x4 wasnt gonna out handle/pace an st170 hehe (this was when we were on single track roads btw not dual carrigeway, would never flash someone out when on a dc)

Not a Ford so not sure how much help it would be but an idea on how you can make driving pay for itself, the Clio 1.5dCI gives the following:

500 miles from 42 litres @ 97.9p = 54.12 mpg @ 8.22p/m

12000 annual miles = £986.40

Minus regular user car allowance from work (£60 per month) = £266.40

Minus 4000 business miles @ 32p/m = -£1013.60

So driving 12000 miles a year actually puts me £1k up each year as long as my maths holds up (Which pays for service and tyres easily)! :)

now thats impressive.

i did look at a clio dci, but having owned a clio for 12months previous i fancied a change.

iirc the dci 80 clio can be remaped to see a touch over 100bhp with a bucket load of torque. shame i dont do many business miles, else i would consider going diesel.

i qualify as a spark in 18months/2yrs anyway by which point i should have a works van to go to and from work in...will save me a fortune :D just need to manage for a little while lol.

i get about 230 to a tank out of my ST170 on v-power, am trying normal u/l now to see what difference there is. Power feels the same and mileage so far looks like it might end up being better.

I only do short trips as I live only a 5 minute drive from work, which doesn't help.

That's not good, the girlfriends sisters gets around 330 miles a tank and she's a pretty heavy footed.

Makes the near 400miles a tank in for the Occy vRS look even better :p

Blimey, I better get a couple of those lambda sensors then, got 25 miles from a tenner in the ST24  That was short trips around town, but the car has always been thirsty and it also suffers hesitation.

Thanks for the tip.

Scort.

In the last week ive done 251 miles from full to empty

Is that normal or super unleaded?

Most ST170's get between 250 and 320 miles to a tank with normal "mixed" driving. I average about 300 miles to a tank in my ST, only time I've ever seen higher was on a long motorway run.

If I were you I'd get your tyres sorted out first and then see what your fuel consumption is like.

it was using normal 95ron

tracking is sorted now, although front passenger side tyre needs replacing, rears also need doing soon so just waiting till pay day and will get a full set, 4 shiny new tyres to go at
