My ghetto E36 ICE install

nice DRZ lol. i bet you'd prefer it if the driver was sitting in a sealed box.

I'd prefer it if I had a listening room with wheels :D

I treat all car audio stuff as a bit of a laugh really. You can never really have it sounding fantastic (compared with what I am used to, at least) so you might as well throw caution to the wind and just have a bit of fun with it all.

thats the best way to look at it:)

*cough*sealed box*cough*

Ghetto ice rocks, ive had loads of crappy installs, my first setup was made up from an old 12mm thick teak coffee table, loads of bass and....... rattles:P

Ive got a decent set up now, no subs as i cant find a decent small sub

Try the Resonant Engineering RE8, apparently it's very good. :)

in car entertainment

personally i would have gone without the 6x9s.

used the rear channels on the headunit to run the front components "active"

big speakers in the back drag the sound stage right behind you and mess it up, not how it should be IMO

good cheap finds tho. top score on that front

Nice! If it's done on the cheap then if something breaks or gets nicked then it's not the end of the world...

If you spend 100's on ICE tho, you are always worrying about your car...

My top e-bay bargain had to be a Phonic MAX1500 amp for £5! It's not a bad amp and goes for £250 new!

Also, try turning off your rear speakers totally, I prefer it like that as you seem to get a better soundstage from just the fronts...

My ICE = components up front, horn sub in the boot. :)

My soundstage is perfectly balanced as it is.

daz, I cannae be bothered finding the TS params to make a new enclosure - that would be like hassle and effort. Ported is fine :p

Tried them, didnt really drop very low, not with my amp anyway, the boot on the ST is stupidly small so i do need something uber compact, 2 RE8's might do the job mind.

Hence my suggestion of just going for a sealed. You can't really get a sealed box wrong... but ported can go badly wrong.

At the end of the day if you want loud, deep bass you need to push a lot of air. Surface area is the best way to do this... :)

I've seen people use RE8s in the front as part of 3-way setups.

I'm a big fan of cheap ICE.

My last ICE system comprised of 5 Sinfoni amps, a Pioneer P9 running fully active Focal Utopias with a Focal sub in the boot. It was all installed professionally and RTA's by Mark Turner.
My current system is a cheap Pioneer head unit (£100) a set of Alpine components (£80), a Kenwood 10" sub I had lying around and a 4 channel JVC amp (£100)

Considering my current system cost less than the RCAs did on my last system it sounds damn good.

I've done the expensive ICE thing and it's just not worth it. It's a law of diminishing returns and I think that a sub £500 system can produce 90% of the quality of a £10k system as long as it's installed and set up correctly.

Totally agree with this, the soundstage in a car is far from perfect, add in road noise and spending thousands is pointless, the only thing i don't mind spending big money on is the HU.

Pffft, amatures, this is cheap ICE

:D

Just a thought, but won't the 6x9s get a hammering from the sub when they're trying to push air against each other? Is it possible to box them into their own airspace?

Technically, the air should all be moving in the same direction unless there are phase issues.

Ultimately, I couldn't care less about this setup, its a bit of a laugh and not really anything more than that. If the 6x9s popped tomorrow, I wouldn't really care.
