Hybrid K04 next? Over 300Bhp?

I'm not sure! I'm looking into different options at the moment. An ATP eliminator kit looks tempting as I wouldnt have to change the downpipe etc. I do have a spare engine here that I think I'm going to build up so the internals can cope with the power without a worry and I can just swap them over when it's ready. I also need some bigger injectors and a suitably uprated fuel supply system.

The eliminator turbos come in 290bhp, 350bhp and 400 bhp versions but, it's so nice to drive now as the K03s spools up so early, I dont really want to spoil that by putting a HUGE turbo on it. Is an extra 30bhp worth £1000+? I might aswell go for the extra 90bhp for the same price!

Much research required before deciding. Need to remember that it's FWD aswell!

Some pics of the interior and the new grill (not sure on the grill, will probably only use it for track days)

Feredo DS2500 brake pads were awesome, didnt fade once. Front disks will need replacing as they were a bit grumbly by the end.

Little bit of an update on this following another track day I did last week.

I'd ordered a new set of disks a few weeks ago and had some time to fit them a few days before the track day and found the DS2500 pads didn't cope that well with the previous track day I did.

DSCF0466-1.jpg

That was about 190 track miles and about 400 non hard road miles. I've used DS2500s before on lots of road cars (no track days) with no problems at all, it looks like they don’t like sustained high temp use.

I decided to try some Pagid RS42 pads or blues as they are commonly known. I didn't even have time to bed them in before the track day.

DSCF0020.jpg

I found some other bits that needed replacing, the CV boots were worn and the track rod end rubber seals were perished. When replacing the CV boots I checked the CV joints and found they were binding at certain points. All the parts were replaced with genuine VW parts this time. Hopefully they will last longer than 10k miles! It's a lot better to drive with new CVs, much less torque steer.

The Pagids were brilliant all day, totally consistent with lots of pedal feel and inspired lots of confidence. They were much better on track than the DS2500s. I was catching most of the cars on track under braking :D

I checked them after the day and they looked in a much better state then the DS2500s.

Those Toyo R888s grip surprisingly well in damp conditions!

One more track day next month and then it's time to take it off the road for a few mods over winter.

how are the pagids for just normal fast road use, currently have ds2500s on my car at the moment cant fault them really but if there is a better alternative ill give them a shot.

The Pagids are really good from cold, they seem to require less pedal pressure than the Ferodos to stop. They do say "not approved for road use" on them so I'd stick to DS2500s for fast road use unless you're having problems with them.

Pagids are also about £50 more a set for the Golf, but worth it for me as if they last 2 track days or more then they work out cheaper than the DS2500s.

It's still going, so I thought I should update!

Track day next Friday at Anglesey, so a few bits to do before then.

The Pagid RS42 have worn and I dont think they will last another track day, a supplier suggested I try the next pad in the range the RS14. These are a ceramic based compound and should be even better than the RS42s.

RS42s after 3 track days, in much better condition than the DS2500s

I've also decided to add some ducting to keep the brakes cooler and hopefully extend pad life!

Purchased a set of brackets via a group buy on Club GTI

DSCF0021.jpg

They fit on the caliper carrier like this

DSCF0022.jpg

Ducting in place

DSCF0026.jpg

and fed from a SWG vent that replaces the fog lights, it's designed for a bigger hose so I had to modify it to fit, not very tidy but it will do until I find a better solution.

DSCF0027.jpg

I've also ordered a set of new wheels that should be lighter than the original BBS RAs they should arrive Tuesday hopefully. Will update with more pics then.

There's a lot of surface rust that needs to be dealt with, amazing how fast it forms. I'm pricing up getting the shell sand blasted and repainted before it gets any worse. If that happens I'll seam weld it and add a cage at the same time.

The duct bracket is made of steel.

A few bits arrived today

After the last track day and some unusual wear on the front tyres I purchased this

DSCF0045-2.jpg

It should give me real time monitoring of tyre pressures on track, I don’t think I was getting a true representation of pressures after a cool down lap and in the pits.

The valves and sensors were bolted to the new team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2s

Display mounted by the gear lever out of the way, but can easily be checked

I will hard wire it in the future and try and hide it somewhere!

Can you guess what rear pads these were? Very similar wear to the front set that came off

Just an oil change and a good wash before the track day tomorrow :D

oooh that tyresure thing looks cool. Be good to see the temp/pressures rising and allow you to tweak pressures for certain tracks after a few laps?

It will hopefully give me a better idea of what's going on after a few laps and I can then adjust the pressures to suit.

How much was the tyre pressure monitor?

It was £165 from http://www.rockshore.uk.com/tyresure-tyre-pressure-monitoring-system-tpms-1689-p.asp

I couldnt find any decent reviews of it so I took a gamble. I'll post tomorrow night to let you know how I got on with it, the readings seem to compare with another gauge I've got and the tyre fitter's one, so it's seems quite accurate. How it behaves on track is another matter!

Tyre Pressure thing looks cool, how heavy are the sensors?

I've no idea! Not much at all, but the wheel has about 70g of balancing weights opposite to it!

The Tyresure system works really well, suprising how quickly the pressure drops when you do a cool down lap. I could also back off and come in to drop the pressures if they got high. Maximum air temp within the tyres was 76 degrees :o It was quite easy to see when the Toyo's were about to go off and do a few gentle laps before pressing on again. Didn't stop the unusual wear though so I'm looking at running part worn slicks at the next track day.

I had so much fun today, highlight was keeping up with a fully stripped out, caged, slick running 260bhp E30 M3 for about 10 laps, he came over afterwards and asked what the hell I had under the bonnet! :D

Always wondered how does the reading get from inside the tyre to the computer thing. Also how is it powered (the bit inside rim)?

It's battery powered and claims to have a 7 year life!

That sounds cheap for what it is/does.

Perhaps try one of those handheld temperature gauges to take the readings accross the tread of the tyre too, but if they cool down as quick as your making out it might be difficult to get some accurate readings.

Where were you, Anglesey again?

Going to try some slicks I think, R888s are only good for 2 track days on the front :o:D

Yes, Anglesey again, will probably be doing another in the next month or so.

Are you keeping your BBS RAs? ;)

Yes I'm keeping them ;)

What have I done!

Didnt see the point in starting another thread. I've just come across this Golf that a guy owns on the golfmk2 forums - how mint is this

33k on the clock.

That is really clean! Shame the Mk2 I bought today isn't that tidy :D

May I introduce to everyone the next phase of this project...

Saw this on ebay this morning, went to see it this afternoon. I am now the proud owner of another Mk2 Golf. It's a 1984, 1.3, 136k miles, 2 owners from new (one for the last 6 weeks, the other since new) and it hasn't got a sunroof! Some bits need some TLC but it's solid where I need it to be.

I'm picking it up tomorrow :)

Plan is to strip this one down, seam weld it, get a welded in cage and then transfer everything over from the other Golf, with a few more track focused modifications.

Being realistic the Golf is slowly turning into a track car anyway, but this new shell means I can still do trackdays over the summer.

What engine is going back in the GTi? :)

Thats quite an early Mk2, how much did you pay?

Not sure yet, I have an 8V here but may go for something totally different.

It was £525, probably a bit over what it's worth, but It's close and I wont have much time to go searching for one in the next few months.

Edit I see you did! I thought those houses looked familiar

Just a word to the wise.. If it's one of the guys from the 1st Council House opposite the Playground by the Church it was parked in, or his mate that lives just down the road from the Church on the same side, then make sure you get all the Documents and check the VIN/Engine No.'s etc, make sure it's a proper kosher job before you drive away with it

Yes I did, do you know the car?

EDIT

Thanks for the heads up, everything matched up fine. I was a bit paranoid when I arrived for some reason ;)

I don't want to hijack the thread but where would you suggest getting some MK3 golf (4 bolt) steal wheels from with good tyres?

I may need some new tyres on my golf soon and I guess buying a set of rubbish wheels on with god tyres will be the cheapest way to do it?

Ebay, scrap yard or local free ads. Or try a wanted on Club GTI, lots of people upgrading to alloys. Lots of VAG cars use the 4 stud setup (Golf mk1+2, Passat, Ibiza etc)

I don't know the car no, two guys use that Car-Park to sell, if you go past their houses you'll see the next batch getting sorted for sale....Or bits of them ;) I'm sure you know what you're doing though :)

The setup screamed 'home trader' which made me paranoid from the start, I double checked everything and all the documents were in order, call it a calculated risk, all I really need is the shell!

No updates sorry, nothing done to either in a while, busy enjoying the summer at the moment.

I'm not getting the whole "new shell" thing. What's up with the old one? It is a newer car after all

Underneath the old one is starting to get a little tatty. Having a sound bare shell will give me a better starting point. The "new" older shell is in much better condition than the "old" newer one!

also...having no sunroof helps with bodyflex to IIRC?

It also keeps the weight down

Means you can work on one shell whilst driving the other??

That the most important point, I can prepare the second shell without any pressure to get it done and still enjoy driving it.

What an interesting afternoon!

Was going to start on this today, decided to move the 1.3 one (ie the spare shell) into the shed so I could start taking bits off. It started first time after it had been standing for 3 months, drove it into the shed and left it running for a while.

I went to the other Golf (the proper one) to start it and let it warm up so I could move that into the shed also. Battery was flat so I went back to the shed to get a booster pack.

I noticed some flames underneath the Golf that was in the shed and some under the bonnet. Ran back to the other Golf to grab an extinguisher. Emptied all of it through the grill but it didn't put all the flames out.

Ran to get a hose pipe and shoved it under the bonnet, tried to empty a few buckets of water on the car but the fumes were getting awful, I couldnt see the car from the shed door  Fire brigade were called and the following is the result:

Gutted :(

I think one of the fuel lines ruptured under the bonnet and the fuel hit the hot exhaust. Anyone with oldish cars check your fuel lines!

Total damage report:

One 1.3 Golf mk2
4x Team Dynamics Pro Race Alloys fitted with R888s and tyre pressure monitors
4x Jerry Cans (Thank god they were empty)
Lots of tools etc etc

Bright side:

No one was hurt
At least it wasn't *the* Golf :p

I'm not sure what to do now with this project, maybe it's time to call it a day and get something else.

The new shell wasn't insured, didnt see any reason to as it was going to be sat in the shed as a bare shell once I started it.

Current Golf shell isn't that bad, this new build was going to be a bit more track focused.

Trying to find another shell in that condition without a sunroof is going to be difficult.

Well it's been a year or so without an update, so:

After about 12 months of thinking I've decided that spending another £4k and countless hours on this isn't really the best course of action.

The Golf has been off the road for the last 12 months due to new job commitments and I haven't had any spare time to drive or do anything major to it!

I've just bought a B5 S4 and have some minor plans for that to make it a bit more interesting, but the Golf is going to stay as it for the foreseeable future.

Mods, what's the best way of making sure this thread is kept somewhere?
