My Mac Pro arrives

Glad its going well for you. Even with 8 cores and all that RAM i'd have thought fsx would be expected to run brilliantly. I read when it first came out that the gfx card wasn't as important as cpu and ram to run the game - i'd be raging if I bought a mac pro and it didn't run fsx well!

Slogan- If you still only have 2Gb of ram you may find that Vista itself is eating up most of that, hence the performance hit.

I have a 8800GTX and 4Gb of ram in my gaming machine and it ploughs through Cod4 at 1920x1200 with everything cranked up to max.

wij, I think you may well be right there. I will give 64-bit a go tomorrow and see if it does anything different.

ringo, if FSX is CPU reliant then I think it may run pretty nicely. ;)

Yeah I would imagine so - I think some of the other guys here run it on MacBook Pros but I never have heard any performance reviews on fsx running on a bootcamped mac.

Just to say, upgraded to 64-bit and everything is running like a dream. Everything at full (1920x1200) on Call of Duty 4 without problems.

Vista 64-bit is using 2gb of RAM on idle - no wonder COD4 wasn't great on 32-bit.

so that means you'd recommend me a mac pro then slogan? I really want to be flight simming again but i'd not want to limit myself to a windows box! I'm glad to hear that using the 64 bit version worked better for you.

Shouldn't be using that much? Vista sets aside ram in relation to how much you have, so it will set aside more if you have 8Gb rather than 4. 64bit vista and 4GB of ram is under 1GB usage, sure some of that isn't superfetch?

Vista uses as much RAM as you have in your system, then frees it up when apps require it. 2GB is still fine for gaming though, I ran CoD4 on 2GB without any noticeable performance issues.

I definitely would, ringo. A GTX upgrade (although I don't need it at the moment) would round things off perfectly. :)

2gb is fine for gaming in XP. Vista has upped the wager a bit and the new 'happy place' for RAM is around 3gb - it was definitely the case on my last (and now sold) PC build in January there.

Yeah i have been tempted to get one for a long time now - nearly as long as when I toyed with the idea of an MBP and eventually ordered one. I used to do a lot of video editing and with HD taking over, a mac pro would be the ideal editing rig. Need to raise a few quid but i'm sure it be worth it. And if it runs FSX well then thats an extra bonus!

Get one.

You're not a man until you've bought one. fact.

:) Will see what happens - When the need really arises to prove myself as a real man I'll know what to do! Like I said if I had the money I'd buy one tomorrow but by the time I have the funds it will probably soon be due an update.
