My McLaren GT - Ownership Thread

Jeez, nice one! Things have moved on a little from the days where I was "chasing" you in my Supra to the RR day and you were in some battered old Citroen van! Well done man, enjoy it.

I think you might have me confused with someone else… I’ve been to many a rolling road day but I have never once owned any sort of van or even driven a Citroen van! Trying to think of cars I’ve been to rolling road days in…

Mondeos (1.8 and an ST200), MR2, Alfa 159, supercharged mx-5, think I came to one in my 535d as well. Probably others as I’ve owned too many cars over the years!

What’s really scary is how this forum has moved from everyone owning a mondeo, to everyone owning a 5 series and now everyone has a super car! How did I get stuck at the mondeo stage!

What’s really sad is I bought my mondeo in 2008 when they were still popular in here! Maybe I’ll jump straight to the super car?!?!?

lovely motor hope it brings many many hours of enjoyment!

Owned a Mondeo, never had a 5 series, and now have a public transport card :D

JayEmm just published his thoughts on the McLaren GT
https://youtu.be/jrWhvoCo630

In summary : a great supercar but not so great at the GT part.
Interesting to hear his opinion. I think I agree with some of what he’s saying but I think he’s missed the point somewhere along the way - probably because he doesn’t really do a long drive as part of the review.

Watch the Harry Metcalfe video where he drives one down to the South of France for example and I think he “gets” it far more because he’s using it for long drives etc.

There is clearly an understanding gap around the marketing of the GT but I think people seriously interested in this sort of car will draw their own conclusions vs the DB11 and Conti GT. Open the boot of a Vantage vs DB11 for example and you wonder if you really could do the same trips in both from a luggage POV (probably!) but have a much sportier drive doing it (definitely!). It’s that sort of bias/tipping point which the GT sits on the other side of to the more traditional GT cars. Which is why I loved it enough to buy one :)

Enjoy the car OP, life is short.

People getting older on here and earning more and also some with different priorities I suspect. I went somewhere in between with a TTRS and split the rest between a holiday home and retirement investment that means I can ignore all promotions and put my feet up in the meantime. If I went more toward the car route I’d probably end up with a Senna, but the additional outlay wouldn’t provide a similar enjoyment return, at least for me. I’m also tired of RWD cars on British roads.

i am really not a car person in the slightest but **** me that thing puts a huge smile on my face. lovely car and health to enjoy :)

I've seen the Jayemm video too and I do tend to agree with him on most things. It seems most of his critism was aimed at Mclarens marketing team really.

Whilst yes, the GT will never be as good as an Aston/Bentley/Maserati style GT for luggage and comfort, it will be far sportier and proves a mid engine car doesnt have to have no cup holders or luggage space.

Unlike the NSX, which has a clip in cup holder and a 110L boot :p

It’s a GT car that, rather than simply by virtue of being powerful and having handling that tries to do the best of both worlds and being genuinely sporty because lots has been thrown at it, it goes further and from the opposite direction, and has kept its original genuinely sporty roots and had a few creature comforts added, from what I can tell based on all the comments?

The more I look at it the more I like it. Far more striking in the orange and more pleasingly aesthetic than the 570S. Most of the shots I've seen have been black cars and you load focus on the detail. I'd struggle doing only 5k in that!

Congrats mate, gotta say with mclarens they are lovely looking and designed cars but have heard horror stories with their build quality and customer service (depends on where you got it from aswell)

keep us updated

Also didnt you consider a maserati or lambo etc..

Picked it up earlier today. Couldn’t be happier!

I’d managed to keep it a secret from my partner as well, so I’m pleased to report that I am still alive and unhurt. A Jo Malone candle might have influenced that outcome somewhat!

L322 Range Rover, Mk7.5 Golf and a McLaren GT. Not a terrible 3-car garage :)
