My Mini-Sidewalk

No quite simply you said his hobby and passion was pertheric, thats about as offenive as you can get without calling him names

No, I was calling the fact an N reg car thats apparently simply fun needs a complete stripdown as pathetic, not his hobby. I'm well aware of what I said, considering I typed it.

Given that I spend far too much free time polishing my own car I'm not one to call other peoples hobbies pathetic. I was refering purely to the car in question and it's inability to last 5 minutes without a complete rebuild, not his hobby. It is this inability which makes it hardly 'simple fun'. More 'complex and involved fun'.

Dont know where your getting that from, but they dont need constant rebuilds. They run very well, granted you have any idea about taking care of a motor vechile. Its simple in that fitting parts is usually an easy and painless job. Its also simple in that it just works and for when it was made it has stood the test of time pretty well i would say (the mini in general), well at least to many other cars from such a time period.

Yes BMWs are great, other makes are great, jaguar, merc etc but mini is just in a different league (which is neither a good or bad thing) as you can use it for pretty much anything.

OP is simply doing a project and given us an insight, no need to call him pathetic.

Rather, I think the idea that a car which requires constant mechanical attention and engine rebuilds is 'simple fun' as rather pathetic, it quite clearly isnt simple fun at all. It's complex fun.

Mine never did. It's all about buying the right car in the first place and maintaining it correctly. Very few "normal people" who own Minis don't service them correctly.

Saying that, my girlfriends Mini Engine seized before xmas.

Mini's are small fun cars, you can swap parts in out very easily. There easy to make your own. You can ticker with them.

Going round rounderboats and Motorways in mini's, kinda scary :D

BMW's are big motorway cruisers(who stay in the right lane).

Different leagues.

Anyway, on a lighter note you better watch out all you Mini owners because I'm out there looking for you and I'm going to eat you alive :D

LONG LIVE 60'S TECHNOLOGY!!!!

Great, looks nice and red :)

Isn't that the one that Basil had from Faulty Towers, which used to breakdown all the time? :p

Maybe not ;) :

Also what i like to do when driving in the mini is putting your foot down, especially in second gear and then changing to third at like 40 or something. Just a very satisfying car to drive in my opinion.

This looks really fun:

Fox youve just done it. your not helping yourself.

If you dont have something constructive to say in someones project thread then stay out.

It clearly is his hobby else wise he wouldent be doing it!

That's great, I really like Minis :)

That said, although Fox isn't the most diplomatic person in the world, I do kind of see his point. It does seem an excessive amount of work to have to do to an N-reg car (looks at 25-year-old car in sig that hasn't had anywhere near as much work ;) )

Still, it's a hobby and I love project Minis

Arguing with you is like pulling teeth. Where have I said it's not his hobby

I think you implied it when you said that a thread, about doing a project/rebuild with a mini, a classic, british car was pathetic.

Above anything else, it was a bit rude.

It just seems to be the general attitude of a small group of people on here. They got their rules, they stick to them and anything else is crap or pointless. Not directly aimed at you Fox. As for simple fun, it is simple to me, it probaly is simple to the op too. If you do this stuff day in and day out its not exactly complex is it? Its all nuts and bolts..

Simple is to turn the key and go with the regular service intervals, not doing major engine work every other month, so no, it's not 'simple fun'. Mechanically however it is very simple.

Thats the case with the vast majority of minis and is very easily achieved if you wish.

people buy minis usually as project cars though to do up and upgrade then use as a hobby car.

my sisters car is a 98 cooper which is regularly serviced, starts every time and has never needed engine work, the A-series is a very robust block and if looked after will probably never need rebuilding to rectify a fault they are often rebuilt becuase thats what many owners want to do.

Maybe he enjoys doing "major" engine work every month? I do work on my fiesta every weekend, i class it as simple..? Whats simple to me might not be simple to you

I cba to argue with Fox to be honest. He’s an idiot through and through. Personal insult or not that’s just the way it is and I’m not fussed if that cops me a ban. He always has to be right even when he’s wrong.

Now on with the project thread. Are you going bare shell with this?

Simple is down to interptiration. But to be honest you shouldent own a car if you dont know how to do an oil change.

But the OP hasnt said anywhere that he had to do a full engine rebuild because of the mini design/engine not being very good, he simply added some polish to it. They are classic cars and need love, attention and to be looked after. The same goes for pretty much all classic cars.

He hasnt put in a new engine just on the simple fact that he just wants a car that works. He states clearly that it is to be used for track/drag use and is a hobby/pastime/project of his. No different than what we do with computers in my opinion.
