My new 8800GTX is not as sharp as

I plugged in my 2900Pro 2 weeks ago and it did look a bit more vibrant on the desktop and games but as I was already thinking about people's vibrancy differences between ATI and Nvidia so I can't be certain if that influenced me?.

It does seem to be the common consensus that ATi cards produce a more colourful/vibrant image, though I can't say if I've seen it myself since I don't have anything to compare to my current setup. One thing I did notice though was an option within catalyst colour settings that when turned off turned the image grey/washed out in comparison, maybe that's the difference?

After much of research it's shocking that nVidia hasn't released driver to support res @ 1440x900, that's why my text is blurry. I will have to tweak something in the CP to get it displayed normally. This's a top of the range card and it doesn't work with 1440x900 out of the box :(

Really? It's in the Vista drivers, would have thought XP would be the same.

There're properties missing from the CP and I can't get them to displayed even thought I have installed the tweak from NV's site (nopages.reg).
Tried to reinstall FW a few times and it makes no difference whatsoever. And I'm using DVI to VGA connector, Vista 64.
This's what my CP looks like, only very few options!
I'm so let down by NV (had been a very long time ATI user) :(

I don't think your PC is recognising your screen to be honest, you should have the option for 1440x900 in the Change Resolution tab and the Change Flat Panel Scaling option is missing.

Either that or you're using out of date drivers.

Edit: Unless it's something to do with the DVI-VGA dongle.

on LG L226WTQ screen, DVI-D with my 8800GTX, superb image quality.

was using x1650pro on the same monitor, did notice a huge improvement with Aero's transparency. but other than that, text is always as clear. and 3D is so fast, i have to have Vsync on all the game i play (except Crysis, including 4xAA UT3, at native res)

i'd suggest getting a new screen, VGA is very old now, only the cheapest monitor don't have that support.

ive never understood these 2d arguments either. everything ive had past my good old GF440mx has been pin sharp on the vga. on dvi there's simply no problem at all. it has to be a problem with the card itself, or you're imaging it. i cant think of anything else....

...actaually one possible thing. try another vga lead. its possible the card isnt liking it too much.

side by side my 1950XTX does "look" better then my 8800 GTS,
cant put my finger on what it is tho, the picture just looks more washed out on the GTS

Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP 20" over DVI
SAMSUNG LE40M86BD over DVI->HDMI

Shame i sent off my GTS today or i would have taken pics

When I got my OCUK 24" I went out and bought a good Belkin DVI cable, it DOES make a difference to IQ from the DVI cable supplied with the LCD, I'm not one for believing stuff like that normally but it has def made a difference, esp in 2D desktop and IQ of text, even when not using native resolution

Oh not the one digital cable is better than another arguement! It only makes a difference if you are running them out of spec (too long). A Digital signal means you either see a perfect fidelity picture, or you start getting frame loss/ no picture at all.

If you claim you are seeing a better picture you are only deceiving yourself, as blind tests have shown! After all you can't get 100Mb ethernet cables that gives better latency or throughput, can you? Same for digital video/audio cables.

Bah, Owned a few from each camp (8600GT, X800 GTO2, 5900XT, ATI 9700 Pro) and I do reckon the colours look a little less washed out on the ATI's. Btw I'm running a geforce atm so no claims of fanboyism. :D

It's not the card, that's the mistake a lot of people have done returning the card and still have the same problem.
I need to make it clear though that this problem is very apparent with 1440x900 res.
I have a very high attention to details and when I swappd the cards I could see it immediately.
If you google nvidia 8800 1440x900 you will see there're loads of posts about this particular res.
It detects the res and everything is displayed normally apart from text, I have managed to fix it by using FW 174.51 which has a Custom Resolution Timing in the CP.
It's also true that with NV (or 8800 series) IQ in desktop is a bit washed out compare to ATI's.
