Good afternoon all,

I want your advice. I am about to build my PC for myself, it will be my 5th build in about 10 years. So I need your advice on compatibility.
Components are:

My power supply is EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2

I will be using Win 11.

SSD FireCuda 540 PCIe Gen5 Solid State Drive, 2TB - ZP2000GM3A004

Case: Fractal Design R3.

I have a pdf of the case manufacturer it says: Supports graphic card lengths up to circa 290mm and CPU coolers with height of maximum
circa 165mm

It looks like it is compatible, but I assume you're aware you can do a lot better than that for the money?

E.g. motherboard is really expensive if you don't need the features like 5Gb LAN, USB4, WIFI7, higher-end audio. Peerless assassin is a much cheaper alternative to the Noctua.

Good afternoon Tetras,

thank you for your reply. I understand, I have read that
Case: Fractal Design R3.
is not compatible with:

Asrock X870E Taichi Lite (Socket AM5) DDR5 EATX Motherboard"

Due to it being e-atx.

This is my main worry.

Also what is this thing called "memory tuning" at first boot?
Can you please point to the peerless assassin CPU cooler that you have mentioned?

Do you need all those features that brother @Tetras mentioned otherwise there are cheaper options like this at £250 and it will fit in you case being atx.

CPU coolers none of the thermalright peerless assassin and phantom spirit are in stock but take a look here .

Memory tuning you want expo memory for AM5 6000mhz C30 is optimal.

Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 is what Tetras is suggesting and it's around £30. It's a brilliant cooler and keeps my 7800x3d mainly in the 60's when gaming although the max I have seen is 72 degrees C. The Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 is slightly better as it has a extra heatpipe and is only a couple of quid more. There is also the Thermalright Royal Knight 120SE which has the front tower moved further back so it doesn't interfere with any memory and has a 15mm thick fan on it. The rear tower still uses a 25mm thick fan.I would expect around Peerless Assassin performance and the price is around the same as the Phantom Spirit. All Thermalright coolers are in stock elsewhere with free delivery.

Thanks mickiflinn,

Would this https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cruc...6-6000mhz-dual-channel-kit-mem-cru-02219.html

would work for https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...t-am5-ddr5-atx-motherboard-mot-msi-03298.html

As my case is too small for my original choice motherboard (https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asro...-am5-ddr5-eatx-motherboard-mot-asr-03304.html).

I am sorry for asking so many questions, since it has been many years since I built a computer and this would be my first AMD CPU build.
The crucial memory is expo it's the n the description so that's fineabd another option.

The Tomahawk motherboard is also another good choice and will fit as it's ATX.

This is expo C30 memory and cheaper but it's grey as an alternative.

From what I can see, that board would overhang your cable routing holes on the right hand side (ASRock give the measurements on their spec page, if you want to check), but there doesn't appear to be anything that would block it from sliding into place. Though, if you don't need the features there's no need to take the chance.

I have a Seagate SSD FireCuda 540 PCIe Gen5 Solid State Drive, 2TB - ZP2000GM3A004 This will go into the Gen 5 pcie slot as my boot drive.
I actually had the power supply replaced under guarantee four years ago.

I need a long term supported motherboard.

AMD are known for supporting there platforms so you should be good for a long time , what's your matter n use for your pc ?

Before you buy any isrrs out your final list here so we can check it for you.

Thank you all again,

I need a computer for video editing and possible gaming.
I need one for a possible PhD that I am applying for and need something long-term.

Sorry for the late reply, I work for the NHS and get very little time off.

I have decided on the above components. I will try to install them as well as
my power supply is EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 into Fractal Design R3.

I will be using Win 11.

As I understand, the m/b will slightly overhang but is still useable.

My question is:

I have read that on the first boot up a procedure takes place called "memory tuning".
Then after a few minutes I can access the bios (which I will update after building).

What to I need to do in the bios as regards to settings?

Don't pay Noctua's ridiculous prices. You can have similar performance for £30-35 with a Thermalright cooler. Use the money saved for a new psu or the next cpu up the ladder. I wouldn't be paying £430 for a motherboard either, that's just crazy. If overclocking wasn't dead then a arguement for a board like that could possibly be made but as it is a board less than half that price will do 99% of what that can do. Again put the money saved towards a improvement elsewhere.

A extra quid gets you 32Gb of Kingston Fury Beast C30 memory which would be better than the C36 stuff you have picked.

OK thank you, I will not buy that. Then after the build, what do I do next? As regards to memory tuning and bios settings?
I know how to install Win 11.

For the memory all you really need to do is go into the motherboard bios and activate EXPO and it should all work. Personally I would update the motherboard to the latest bios before doing anything else but make sure there are no incremental updates that need to be done in order. If there aren't any then you can just flash to the latest version.
