My new build keeps locking up cant figure out why

Try running prime95 in Small FFT mode. If that still crashes, it's probably your CPU or mainboard.

If it only fails in blend mode, it's probably your RAM.

just ran prime95 in small fft mode for a hour nothings happened yet ill do a full test when i go to bed any more ideas boys thks

Unfortunately - yes. :(
I'm going to point the finger at the 5850 and the 10.2 drivers. I think you have the same problem as I and a few others have. The 10 series of drivers have been causing a lot of crashes in all sorts of rigs. BSOD, GSOD and black screens.

You can google many other threads under grey screen of death or GSOD. I'm currently running the 10.3 beta drivers which seem to have helped a little. The 10.3 official is supposed to fix this crash altogether according to ATi. The 10.3 beta is also easily googled.
To test if this is a problem, just swap in AN Other GPU and see what happens.

even during normal things like browsing the internet ?? and i do get little green squares when loading up windows sometimes but only for a split second no grey lines though. i only want the drivers though is there a way just to get them. i only have a nvidia 7600gt here so it would probarbly be a mess with all the drivers. what happens when urs crashes mine just freezes the pic on my screen no lines or anything

From what I've read - yes, possibly. I have flickering when windows boots.
I can't link to the 10.3 beta drivers as they're on a competitors site. But google will find them quickly.
It is a pain to swap the cards, I'd run your other tests and breakout the screwdriver in the morning. It's not hard to do, uninstall ati driver, uninstall card, install old card, install nv driver.

Yh im just lazy lol ive just got the new drivers and im not sure if they will work on 64bit would u use them oh yh newby question do i need to uninstall the old drivers first

I'm running W7 64 and they are better, but I still get crashes. Last time I got a couple of hours of gaming in first.
Download the nv drivers first to the desktop so you can find them if you go that far.

First donload 10.2 and 10.3 beta and NV driver to desktop where you can find them easily.

To install 10.3
1) Uninstall ATi drivers - completely. You may have to reboot.
2) install 10.3beta
3) See what happens.

To test new card
1) Uninstall ATi drivers - completely. You may have to reboot.
2) Uninstall the card
3) Install NV card
4) install NV driver
5) re-test system
