Will be trying to just keep an updated picture log of my build as I do it (first proper full build).

If anyone feels like chiming in with tips I'd be very happy, also apologies if this is the wrong place for it!

(also I'm following the build guide stickied in this forum)

Haha thanks, and yeah I noticed, was hoping there might be a "scale" tag associated with the IMG bbcode, but obviously not, will have to scale each one.

Don't suppose you could recommend a batch image resizing tool?

Nice build, would be nice to see a written list of the items you have there in that first pic :)

First result on Google ;)

Yeah , had already got one by that point - sorry for the LETMEGOOGLETHATFORYOU question :)

Ok so now...

PSU is in:

Blu-Ray is in:

RAM is in,

So a quick question, using the prolima megahalems cooler - do you think this will give me problems given where I've put the RAM atm? Also - should it be in pairs as in the picture- or in triplets (all white/blue)

Also, I had thought about an SSD, but decided it wasn't worth it atm and I can always upgrade later when the price is a bit more reasonable - for now I'm using the 1TB Caviar Black

Mobo RAM slots will be labeled - read the manual to make sure but it is normally all the blue (on your board) slots first.

The megahelims shouldnt foul the ram as the corsair xms 3 is low profile, unlike the dominators which feature a heatsink arrangement. I had a similair worry with my ocz reaper and a TRUE, turned out i had loads of room to spare.

So the RAM is now all in the Blue slots (as in the manual - I did check :D) and I've checked both orientations of the cooler and it's fine. Just wondering if there is an advantage to doing it any particular way (other than to optimise the airflow?

Also I'd like to get the thermal paste right, using Arctic Cooling MX-2, just wondering how much I need to use? And any particular way I should apply it?

Ok so I just watched a few videos and read posts on here about the pasting, so that's done.

Having problems attaching the heater to the brackets though - worried about applying too much force to the spring screws - should it really require me to press quite hard?

This might help - the bracket that the cooler is mounted on. The opposite screw is in place, but not tightened, just so it's biting. Pushing down on this spring screw to get it to bight might require me to press quite hard. Is this normal?

The ideal situation is to have the cooler mounted so that hot air is pushed towards the rear case fan.

Regarding the thermal paste, a rice grain sized drop on the cpu is plenty, then allow the pressure of the heatsink to spread it out.

Yep, that's what I've chosen to do. Though I will just have the one fan mounted at the moment. (Thanks for the picture :))

Ok, so I got the spring-screws to attach to the bracket without TOO much force, just wondering how tight I should do them? They're each in about 3/4 turn atm, and just worried obviously about applying too much pressure.

So an update pic, cooler is attached, the fan is half mounted (in case I need to tighten the spring screws on the cooler bracket)

yes the fan cable is flailing around atm, I will try and sort that later.

So just going to wait on working out or finding out how tight the screws should be, then going to mount the mobo in the case :D

Found an answer :D just looked around at the different pics of builds using this cooler, and there were a few on the rampage, so just looked at how tight the screws were compared and tightened them a bit :D

Unsure of the mounting on the megahelims, but the build is looking really nice so far, look forward to seeing more of this.:)

Thanks for the comments guys!

OK, so another problem: when mounting the motherboard in the case, I'm struggling to get the holes to all align (I have correctly put the mounts in the case I'm sure, all of the other holes are noway near).

There is some "padding", like a soft coated foam on the back of the I/O shield plate, I think i could eek out the last few mm's that I need by removing this, but is it meant to be removed?

edit: sorted this guys, shield plate wasn't tucked completely in so it was flush with the case, seems to fit fine now :D

No, the padding is a new feature on asus motherboards of late, it does away with the flimsy metal strips that used to be the norm. Just check that all your stand offs are correctly placed, often with the cushioned i/o plate you have to force the board a little to get it to line up properly, once in place tighten the outermost screws on the board to prevent it from pushing out again.

Your power supply is upside down, the fan should be sucking air in from the bottom of the case through the filter, then its blown straight back out the rear of the PSU and case.
