I sold my Mini Cooper S last week due to needing/wanting a larger car and the fact that it had a bone-shattering ride which was admittedly not helped by the run flat tyres.

Anyway, I've spent the last couple of months looking and test driving several cars including: Audi A3 3.2 DSG, VW Golf GTi, Mazda 3 MPS (mk1 & 2), Mazda 6 MPS and a Mondeo ST220. All of them had good and bad things about them, but I was really impressed by one car in particular because it seemed to offer everything (except economy, but ******* to that!); the Mazda 6 MPS.

The 6 MPS is pretty damn rare, and finding one registered pre 23rd March 06 to avoid the ridiculous £470 a year tax was incredibly difficult, but I did spot one as soon as it was advertised on autotrader (literally within the hour) at a Vauxhall dealership (it was taken in part exchange). I asked a list of questions before putting down a £100 deposit. Fast forward to now, and after a ~ 470 mile round trip yesterday it is now in my possession and I am extremely happy.

It is a 2006 (on a 55 plate) with 62,000 miles on the clock. Absolutely immaculate with literally no visible scratches, dents or marks on the paintwork; and the interior is pristine too. The wheels have just been refurbished and it's had 4 new tyres by the dealer.

It has an excellent amount of equipment as standard including full leather, heated memory seats, electric/heated door mirrors, xenon lights w/ auto levelling (which are very good), 7 speaker Bose sound system with 6 CD auto changer, auto climate control, cruise control, electric sun roof, multi-function steering wheel, etc. This one also has the optional parking sensors and bluetooth.

The only annoying thing I've spotted so far is that the dealer fitted budget tyres (Nangkang & Toyosport!) which will be replaced shortly with some Goodyear Eagle F1 AS2s.

It cost me just £3,900, which I think is a genuine bargain. Oh, and it's not a Cat D. ;)

A couple of rubbish pics of it below covered in dirt and ice. I'll upload better ones shortly.

Bargain!

Nearly 260+ hp and 280ft/lbs of torque in a pretty looking, solid saloon. What's not to like.

Get some proper tyres on, a review seems to suggest Bridgestone RE050 were standard.

My relative had one. Amazing car but it does drink fuel like a thirsty elephant. So he got rid.

Lot of car for the cash, hope nothing expensive breaks during your ownership.

Me too. It does have 3 months warranty and I'm getting it serviced next week and everything checked over (even though it's not due a service for another 5k miles). I'd rather spot any issues or potential issues now so that I can get them fixed. These are pretty reliable though, just need to keep an eye on the VVT actuator and timing chain which commonly go wrong. I'll have those closely looked at next week.

More interested in blue car.... Looks like an rs4... I think it is

It is, not mine though. :(

In addition i'd ditch the standard 215 profile tyres and stick 225's on it, this gives you a better choice of quality tyres and i think works out cheaper too.

Yeah that's what most people on the MPS Owners forum have done. The Goodyear EF1 AS2s in 225/40/18 are only £102.5 each at Camskill at the moment, plus you get a £40 Tesco fuel voucher. :)

3900 quid, seems very cheap considering its from a dealer with warranty.

lot of car for the cash, nice one OP

Hi

Out of curiousity, you said "one registered pre 23rd March 06 to avoid the ridiculous £470 a year tax " .. so whats the tax like on yours ?

Cheers

I would have gone for one of these over my Octavia VRS if i found one this cheap! The saving would have paid for all the fuel :p

I never get any car bargains :(

It's worth checking the rear diff and gearbox, both seem to be expensive potential issues and weaknesses with the 6, might be worth getting the oil changed in both just to make sure all is ok.

Will be very interesting for you to update us in a month or so with your real world MPG.

Well worth doing, no idea why Mazda fitted the odd tyre size to both the 6 and 3mps.
