My new car

It's worth checking the rear diff and gearbox, both seem to be expensive potential issues and weaknesses with the 6, might be worth getting the oil changed in both just to make sure all is ok.

Will be very interesting for you to update us in a month or so with your real world MPG.

Well worth doing, no idea why Mazda fitted the odd tyre size to both the 6 and 3mps.

Thanks, will keep an eye on them too and I will make sure both have their oil changed next week.

Very very nice. I love everything out these cars (except the exhaust, looks a bit silly having the small pipes in such a big housing). For the price you paid it looks like you have got a bargain!

Let us know how you get on, how does it compare to the ST220, I imagine it feels a bit quicker given the turbo? Have you owned any performance cars before (apart from the mini), how does it compare? Any plans to mod it at all?

Enjoy :D

That's fantastic. I have a mazda 3 sport and have always thought this would be an ideal upgrade but they're too expensive to insure at the moment. Looks like a great all rounder and for what it is, I don't think the MPG is too bad really.

Unfortunately the ST220 which I test drove was a bit of a dog and I wasn't able to properly test out its handling. From my limited test drive I'd say that the ST220 felt more nose heavy due to the V6. It felt as if it had a little more body roll in the corners as well. However the power was more linear and overall it felt a little more refined than the 6 MPS. I personally didn't find it exciting enough, and coming from a Cooper S I think the ST220 was a step too far for me.

The 6 MPS is heavy but it doesn't feel as heavy as it actually is which is what I love about it. The in-gear acceleration feels very impressive and it pulls very well from low rpm but starts to run out of steam above 5800rpm. The trick is to change gear at around 5800 which puts you right back into the boost. I've been told that a cold air induction and remap will change that though and allow it to pull hard right to the limiter. It's also very comfortable and handles any bumps extremely well but with minimal body roll in the corners.

I'm keeping the car stock for a while as it feels plenty quick enough as it is and I want to get used to it first. I will eventually install a Corksport SRI & TIP which apparently makes a significant difference and a remap. That should see it to 300BHP. I'll probably have a custom cat-back exhaust fabricated at some point but it won't be loud at all. I like the fact that this car is subtle and I plan to keep it that way. :)

Absolutely, it's subtlety is part of the appeal for me as well. I was hoping you had plans to play with it a little and a remap seems a good shout, 300bhp would be bonkers :D.

I've looked at a few of these in the past and it surprised me how smart and classy they feel inside. I remember looking at e46s at the same price point as the MPS and noticing how ropey they look in comparison, different sort of owners I guess.

I mean subtle compared to say an Impreza or Evo or some other mental japness, also lacks the cred/attention from a Merc or BMW. Yes the MPS has massive dual exhausts but aside from that I wouldn't have thought joe blogs would notice it as a performance car and most of the McDonalds club wouldn't be interested without tinted windows or a huge spoiler.

To be fair the 350z Mugen is a boy racers nirvana. However that doesn't stop it being an epic car unlike the normal car of choice for these youngsters. :)

4wd? Remember looking at these and was interested in MPS but I can't remember if it was these with the 4wd or the hatchback.

Pretty sure the hatchback didn't have 4wd and it put me off.

Great car for good money looks like a top buy.

The MPS is 4WD but is only available as a saloon due to the extra strengthening Mazda had to install. The standard Mazda 6 is available as a hatchback but no 4WD that I am aware of.

Yep, the 3mps is FWD only, all 6mps's are AWD, it's quite a good AWD system too.

Yeah as I thought, sorry I did mean MPS 3 and the MPS 6, the 3 had the similar (same) engine but lack of 4WD, whereas the 6 got all the goods, seems odd I suppose it must have been a cost/demand issue.

Is it a permanent 4WD or like say the Haldex system?
