It depends on how your tower is designed ;

I generally for my own case go for :

PSU
Motherboard
Connect the case light/hard drive light
CPU
CPU Cooler
Optical + Floppy Drives
Graphics and other cards
Hard drives
Close case.

I go for

Case Fans (if needed)
PSU
(CPU->Motherboard, then Tuniq to motherboard)
Motherboard (et al)
Memory
HDD
DVDRW
GPU
LIGHT/BUTTON front panel

See if you can tidy the cables as you go, it's so much easier that way.

@mishima: Back in the forums with a new sig I see, very nice!

mines a little different...

PSU
The I install the cpu/cpu cooler/ram on the mobo.. then... if its a tuniq tower... id install the cpu/ram only then install the cooler once its in the case.
Motherboard into case
LIGHT/BUTTON front panel
GPU
HDD
DVDRW

then i cable them all up

I'm back, its true!! :) Whilst I was a caged animal I thought I'd spend my time designing a new sig for 07! Scared to post in MM now incase I get a suspension without a warning!

Tried and tested way (MANY MANY times) -

Connect CPU, HSF and RAM to mobo.

Position and attach PSU and optical drive(s) to case.

Put mobo in case and attach.

Hard drives.

Graphics card.

Wiring/cables and general tidying.

is it also true that by installing psu first and plugginf it in (but not turned on) that it is better for any earthing/anti-static etc?

Been advised to do it this way;-

Get case (gotta strip old stuff out of it!)
psu (plug in but turned off)
mobo
cpu
cpu fan
memory- mobo has red, yellow, then red, yellow slots for ram, been advised to try using both reds instead of just putting next to eachother??????????
case, lights, fans, buttons etc
hdd
optical drive
then power up, sort hdd, install vista and drivers for mobo and stuff so far
then hdd, sort this (format etc)
then optical drive, sort this
then my ide hdd caddy, sort this (got a sata to ide converter)
close case

Not installin graphics card yet- sending back to get BFG 8800 320 instead ;)
and have i made a mistake by thinking i will have onboard GFX?
any probs with the above??

Just make sure you handle stuff by the edges.

As long as you're not skating around carpet in your socks and rubbing the components on your hair don't worry about it.

Best way to earth yourself is to simply touch the rear of the PSU. It's very easy to be over-cautious. Just build the machine in a clean, dust-free place and you'll be fine.

oh, bugga!
so does that mean i cant install the rest without a card?

also, didnt think of this one till i read the mobo spec- says comes with RAID, i vaguely know what this is, but do i want to set up anything "raid" on my build?

When you say earth yourself, how long do you need to touch the rear off the PSU? Each time before you handle another component?

Yeah, literally just tapping the outer rear of the unit every few minutes will be more than fine. Seriously, don't worry about it so much. :)

I always build outside a case - why hide all that beauty and why why why waste time faffing around with screws and bolts when we want to see how fast out new baby runs at

[1] lay mobo on the box it came it (check to see you dont short anything)

[2] CPU + AS5 into the mobo

[3] CPU HSF

[4] RAM

[5] VGA card

[6] ATX psu connect ATX power and 12V for CPU

[7] Connect monitor cable

[8] Use an old momentary switch and plug into motherboard head panel

[9] Pause to check the above (optional)

[10] Apply power cable to PSU and hit the switch to power up. Check for strange burning smells or components smoking and ensure the CPU HSF is running.

[11] Straight into the BIOS and check the temperatures - stare at this for 3-4 minutes until stable

[12] Go out for a smoke

[13] Come back and straight into the BIOS for some overclocking

-- Once happy and you've installed an OS of your choice then fix into a case.

RAID is something you will not need to worry about.

You can install everything, but you won't be able to use it until you get a graphics card as you'll have no display.

There's no real reason to bother with RAID.
