My new Dell 2405FPW - pictures & first impressions

when you open pics, it opens them at the correct aspect ratio, it doesnt stretch them or anything. The desktop real estate and resolution is really nice for multi tasking side by side (see my early pics on first page) and would be good for photo editing. The colour reproduction is very good, and in general, colours are nice and vivid on TFT's and the image is so sharp and bright that they are a joy to work with. There's a MASSIVE chunk of info on the 2405FPW in the sticky too, so have a look at that for some more info and plenty of user comments.

Dell don't have a zero dead pixel policy, and i think it's around the 5-7 dead sub pixel mark before they consider the monitors faulty. Having said that, they have a good CS and returns policy and so you may be able to arrange a swap for less anyway

backlight bleed is a problem on some monitors where you cna clearly see the backlight leaking around the edges / corners of the screen meaning when you're in a dark room, the backlihgting doesnt seem even. The Dell 2005FPW has been plagued by problems like this since it's release, but the 2405FPW generally doesnt suffer from these issues. The monitor is very bright, but you can easily adjust the settings to get it looking right dont worry

well i have seen no problems with it, but i dont really play any FPS. I am hoping to have some time soon to run some more tests on the screen, so i might install a few more games and test it out. Full review soon i hope :)

Damn this monitor looks sweeter than Kylies bumcheeks. :D

I'm in the amrket for a new one too and never really looked at the Dells however I don't want widescreen I want 1600*1200... would you say that the DELL Ultrasharp 2001FP rivals the DELL Ultrasharp 2005FPW for IQ and response rate (gaming, movies)? :)

EDIT - nm just done some searching for user opinions and it seems it has some ghosting probs.

Think i'll wait to see what the Samsung 214T is like. :)

if you do decide to go with the Dell's the 2001FP and 2005FPW are using the same LG.Philips S-IPS panel anyway, just with slightly different matrix sizes. Many people find the screen is fine for gaming really, but it's down to the individual

Someone please write a review of this for the sticky using the testing guidelines! :D

Richdog, i'll try and finally get mine done soon, will need to install a few FPS games to really test it as im not much of a gamer tbh. Will see if i can get some info up soon though :)

display settings > advanced > the section for your card > desktop management > enable nview desktop manager > user interface > tick "enable display gridlines" and edit the options for them :)

mine is running happily on my very ageing GeForce 4 Ti4200 at native res on DVI :D i movies are totally fine and it can handle the games i play still at pretty much full settings on full native res (NBA Live 2006 and GTA San Andreas)

i agree with what you have said above tbh. Personally i dont play any FPS at all, and for the games i do play like GTA SanAndreas and EA sports games, this texture blurring is not an issue to me. However, i can imagine that it is difficult to deal with if you're a hard core gamer. It may be something you will get used to in time since you have come from a CRT straight to this screen, and hopfully you will not notice it so much once you have gotten used to the feel of a TFT screen more. However, it is not the most responsive screen out there, but for many people it is perfectly fine for gaming. Like pretty much all the TFTs in the market, ghosting and game play depend very heavily on the person :)

one new pic for you now i have my proper black / silver wireless mouse and keyboard combo :)

the keyboard is pretty good. had no issues really with responsiveness or key presses myself. hard to get used to the new layout of the home and delete keys etc but getting used to them now. The F keys you can get round using a reg tweak which makes them permanently whichever way you want them so i have them always as the F keys. I never used their functions anyway. Gues sprint screen is a pain having to toggle between F lock on/off. im quite happy with the set though, it has a nice feel to it and does the job well enough

you cant use the contrast via the OSD from DVI connection. The VGA connection would al.low you since the OSD and monitor electronics can control the VGA interface a little more. In DVI if you want to change contrast then you need to do it from your graphics card settings.

I'm assuming you mean only on this particular monitor? as mine lets u do both contrast and brightness in OSD on both DVI and Analogue :cool:

yeah, i only meant on this monitor. I'm aware that some let you use the controls on both VGA and DVI, but quite a few have limited OSD functionality with DVI connections

Anyone got any suggestions for colour/brightness settings?

i found these good for VGA:

Contrast = 60
Brightness = 5
Pixel Clock = 50
Phase = 14

on DVI i have brightness at 35, and contrast is fixed. I've turned gamma down a little to a level of 1.8 though in my graphics card

these colour settings seemed very popular across a few forums:

Red = 36 / Green = 33 / Blue = 32

they wont do it i dont think. Bare in mind OcUK offer great delivery service and then the TFT is backed by a 4 year on site warranty from Dell. Call the shop if you have any questions though since shop matters are not allowed on the forums im afraid

There both 16ms screens, that’s the only bit that counts.. Now I guess I’m going to hear but its a quality 16ms panel where the 20" is not.. Before buying this pos 20" I asked on at least 3 different forums for advice and 9/10 people said it didn’t ghost/blur... Says allot about the majority of people that buy these screens

Maybe the 24" is better but I find that very had to believe as its still a 16ms display !

feel like i have to join in on this one. First of all, please try to avoid this being personal, there's no need for rolleyes guys :)

Saying that the Dell 2001FP/2005FPW and the 2405FPW are the same is a bit of a sweeping statement. There isn't much similarity other than the quoted response time and the manufacturer of the monitor!

Just because it is rated at 16ms does NOT make it the same as another 16ms display. Firstly they use two fundamentaly very different technologies, the 2005FPW using S-IPS from LG.Philips and the 2405FPW using overdriven PVA from Samsung. These both exhibit different characteristics inherant to their operational differences.

The S-IPS panel is a good 2 years old and that panel technology was never really the most responsive, out of all the technologies used in the market, this is probably the most unresponsive today. Colour reproduction is good, but black depth is bettered in VA panels, thanks to improved alignment of liquid crystals. The PVA panel in the 2405FPW is more responsive, partly due to overdrive, and the black depth and grey scale is improved as should be apparent to every user straight away just from the specs quoted for the contrast ratio (1000:1 as compared with 600:1). Brightness is better (500 candella per metre squared measured, as opposed to 350) and the panel is overall a much newer, and more up to date product.

Seeing as the response time seems to be your main focus here, here's a comparison of the 2001FP/2005FPW (essenitally the same panel) and the 2405FPW:

older, non overdriven S-IPS panel from LG.Philips in the 2005FPW

newer PVA panel from Samsung in the 2405FPW

these come from independent tests at THG. Now i am NOT saying that either screen is ideal for a hard core gamer. These aren't the most responsive panels in the market, and they DO show some blurring. I have seen it myself. However, many many people find them perfectly adequate for gaming, and do not notice the blurring or simply ignore it and get used to it. They aren't as fast as CRT's, and they aren't suited to everyone. Nooone ever said they were, but i personally would never go back to a CRT, and i know a lot of people feel the same

post 548 above mate :) no worries, just don't want to see a perfectly good thread derailed. There's no need for bickering anyway, sensible debate is encouraged and of course everyone is welcome to their own opinions :)

those graphs are measured from Tom's Hardware Guide and are independent tests of the TFT's using their own equipment to measure the response time. Dell have used their own measurements and quoted the response time for each at 16ms (according to THG they reach around 16 - 18ms at the ISO norm black to white transitions, ie at code 255). This is again a different test to the panel manufacturers themselves, and Samsung actually list the panel used in the 2405FPW as 12ms! At least Dell don;t lead with this, which they could if they wanted to, but they like to test them themselves

anyway, this isn't really the point, i was illustrating that the 2405FPW and 2005FPW are not the same, and that they cannot be compared like for like just by saying "they are both 16ms therefore the same"
