My new install after 2 weeks without my car and this is the end result :D

Very pleased with it and its sounds amazing. Its a full JL Audio setup with 2 12s in the boot and a set of JL XR components in the front. The black box in the middle of the boot is a Phoenix Gold 30 band EQ. Only problem is i cant stay out of the car and its costing me a fortune in petrol.

Very very nice! I really like that!

Bet that EQ set you back a bit, and might be a bit overkill for a car... but hey, who am I to judge.

I want a demo at the RR btw :p

That looks pretty well put together, bet it sounds meaty as well :D I remember you mentioning the install a while back on here, wasn't sure if you were getting it done.

Well the EQ was the most expensive part of the install at £500 and all in the full install wiped me £1400.

I know some will call it mad but money well spent to my ears :D even my Dad was impressed and thats saying something, he just doesnt know how much it cost.

It's a very tidy install, certainly the look I'd be keen to go for.

Although, why did you need the EQ?

my guess is to create a more 'pure' sound in the car by fine tuning the different frequencies. the question should be why have an external equalizer? what headunit do you have installed DezUK?

I like it. It's nice that it's stealthy too. :) Look forward to hearing/seeing it at the RR day if you are coming!

I've never been too bothered about having hi-fi quality sound in my car, but if I were to do it I'd do it properly like that. :)

Things have perhaps changed since i was into ICE, I was into it in a big way 15 years back, had Alpine, Phoenix Gold, Rockford Fosgate, Monster Cable to name a few. Perspex cabinets in the boot etc, split charging system. Amazing the sound some cars can produce.
I remember going to a sound off once where this Van had such low frequencies it nearly made me sick.
Some serious money spent in this hobbie as well.

Anyhow, I was always under the impression, If a professional installer set's and builds your system into your car, they use a sound meter and there was another device, which i forget the name of, that was used as well to set the sound.
Why now do you need a 30 band EQ?
I thought if you spend good money on a system you shouldnt have to play around with the EQ. it should be set up and be left alone for the best clarity.

Like i said, I have been out of ICE for some 15 years, that's what i knew then. Things of course change, but i always thought the best way of getting sound to the speakers was to keep it the exact or as close to the way it was originally recorded on.

Please educate me on todays developments anyhow. be interested to know why EQ have come back into fashion.

cheers

to tune the subs/components to:

a: the car
b: the type of music played
c: the speakers themselves.

the headunit eq simply cannot do as much as a 30band can.

my experience is more with venues, but the same principles apply. the sound waves are bouncing of everything, different shapes and objects. a venue needs to be tuned to make it sound its best, and remove unwanted frequencies. you dont just throw a microphone into a power amp then out of a 6k PA.
once it is done though, not normally any need to change it.

p.s. tasty install!

Well the EQ is there to setup all the levels so that the sounds can sound as crisp as possible and since a hefty set of components are in the front the EQ can be justified. As was said earlier the EQ settings on the head unit just cant cut it and especially with the Alpine usnits sibce they produce a very trebble heavy sound. The EQ allows the system to perform at its best and beliebe me it sounds really good, you can hear all the instruments and the bass is really clear.
