My new iMac

Yep, to confirm it is a WD Mybook 500GB :)

Bought it from a mate last week to store my camcorder footage on and to tide me over until I hopefully get a Netgear Ready NAS....once I have some money again that is!

The Mybook has Firewire 800 so transfer rates have been pretty good so far. Have yet to see if iMovie can handle reading footage from it whilst editing, hopefully it can, otherwise I will have to copy back over the clips I am working on.

Looks awesome :) I've started on the road to get me the same spec, and I have hte same hard drive as you :p

Just need to sell my Macbook Pro and some PC bits and I'm good to order, helps having a substantial discount from work too I guess :)

Can anyone recommend a nice speaker setup to compliment the iMac? I have an old creative 5.1 system, but fancy more tidy 2/2.1 setup now.

Looking at the outputs I can only see a Microphone jack, which the Apple specs describe as 'Headphone/optical digital audio output (minijack)' Doesn't look like an optical output to me?

To be honest, my iMac has a fantastic output on the built in speakers! Don't see any need to get 2.1 system for it at all! Only thing I might look at doing is to get an adapter to plug it into my 5.1 system via optical cable for some proper sound :)

You need a specific type of cable, but it does to optical out on the headphone jack.

If you're going to spend so much on a mac, don't let it down with bad speakers. These sound amazing, despite the low wattage. ;)

Rather than starting my own thread...

Just got myself a 20" iMac mid-week and loving it obviously. So much different from my MacBook - more space! Buttttt: what does anyone recommend for cleaning the screen? The slightest things show up due to the glossiness! Currently using a really silky glasses cleaning cloth, but some liquid might work better for a more thorough clean every now and then?

Cheers, these ones had certainly caught my eye, they do look quite cool. The reviews are pretty much excellent too.

My iMac came with a cleaning cloth, didn't yours? I think it was packed with the 'Everything Mac' leaflet. Black cloth in a clear plastic wallet, about CD size.

They are great. When I used to work for the purple shirt company *coughpcworldcough*, we had these on display playing from a mac at half volume. It filled the whole store. :D

Yeah, it's in there - I use this same cloth for my MacBook though, didn't bother unwrapping theirs. Sometimes have to work quite hard to remove things on the screen though, wondering if a liquid works better every now and then.

More I wipe my MB screen, the more dust it attracts too :(

Surely can't go wrong with deionised water?

Excellent, did some reading up, formatted the MyBook to OSX Extended and it is quick enough for iMovie, so I can capture and edit all my home video directly to and from it :)

Excuse me for hijacking the thread but I have a question regarding audio on imacs... if I wanted to get 5.1 surround sound from an imac, how would you go about it? I am thinking of getting a 24"er but am used to the surround sound I get from my current PC.

^ I don't own an Imac, but i'd presume out of the box it's only optical audio for surround sound (so you'd need digital speakers or an A/V receiver)? Otherwise you'd have to use an external 5.1 card of some sorts.
