My New Python

GTPs are definately gorgeous snakes but as you say, they tend to want to bite a lot. You could get a Jungle Carpet Python, they love to climb, being semi-arborial and they sometimes sleep in the same fashion as a GTP. I am thinking of getting one myself... Its either that or a Bearded Dragon.

So for reference, how aggressive is, eg. a corn snake?

Had a look at them and they seem cool enough. I'm going to have to do a crapload of research before considering buying them though :(

Well they are THE snake for beginners, they never really bite, if they do you wouuldn't feel a things. You would tell if they were about to bite because there neck would go into an S shape, and usually they only head-butt you and don't bite.

Do you have any snakes atm?

That cage looks brilliant, are they expensive to upkeep?
How does the snake get "exercise" lol

Thanks. :) They don't really cost that much to upkeep. It can cost a fair amount to buy the cage and all the furniture but once you have bought it all the only thing that you will have to keep on replaceing is the substrate, which is the wooden chips at the bottom of the cage. I buy large £15 bags that last me about 6 months. Some people use unprinted newspaper as a substrate, which is fine, but I prefer a more natural look.

Cheers.

Edit: badgermonkey - If you are looking at getting a first snake then I would go for either a Corn snake or a Royal Python.

Once you get one snake, you'll want more!

I'll do some research on both :)

Personally I would start with a corn then get a Royal as a second snake, as royals are fussy eaters and you may need to get used to one that is easier to keep first.

I think it's obvious I don't ;) Always wanted one though!

I not actually sure why i asked that question lol..its because im sleepy :( !

How much are the mice to buy for the snakes? Can you feed them live mice?

Its true that they have a rep for being fussy eaters, mine only eats white rats and wont touch a black rat.

Rats cost me £1.20 for a small adult. They eat one a week so its not very expensive. Feeding live rodents in the UK is illegal.

Not live mice because it's illegal and can cause bad damage if it bites the snake.

Frozen mice can be bought in 10s very cheaply think it's something like £3 iirc, but i by mine in bulk of the internet in 100s. Also depends on the size but to start with a corn you will need pinkies (day old mice, no fur, hence being called pinkies)

Edit: don't keep frozen mice for more than 3 months in the freezer as they are no good after that aparantly.

You could get a trouser snake?.. ;)

Plastic cages start at as little as £10, but vivariums are from about £60, but it's cheaper to make your own.

I was talking to a very interesting bloke last night at my gig in Crewe. Apparently he is known in Crewe as 'The Snake Man' and he's got 33 snakes. He's got loads of Corn snakes and Bermudas but the biggest he had was an Anaconda which he had to give to a zoo because it attacked him twice. He pulled his sleeve up and showed me his scars where it bit him and threw him to the other side of the room. It did this twice
He also told me how to deal with a smaller vicious snake which is to let it bite you. He got called out two weeks a go to a Corn snake owner who said his snake just goes for him all the time. On cue he opened the vivarium up and the snake got into striking pose and he just let it hit him over and over until it realised there was no harm. He took the snake home and after four days it became docile - it just needed to be handled.

I used to have 3 Corn Snakes and they were gorgeous. I accidentally killed two of them when the heat controller broke and the temp went up to 120 degrees.

 Poor things! iirc there isn't many anacondas you can keep anymore without a DWA. Some snakes are a bit too big for pets like a reticulated python, believe it or not you can have as a pet, it's the longest and heaviest snake maturing out at 33foot average!

ouch dmpoole, poor little buggas lol, never thought of getting anymore?
I bet that guys arm was destroyed letting all them snakes nibble his arm, do small snake bites hurt much?

Royals bites hurt a bit their teeth are little little pins and they have a lot of them but it's nothing compared to bites like this!
