My New Torch

Maglite all the way for me.

Led torches are great, got one here for £5 of ebay. 5 super bright led's and they are bright. Brighter than any normal bulb, that includes mag lights or any industrial torches (size for size). But the best bit had it over a year and it's still on its first set of 3 AAA battery's. been on several camping trips, used on the car and power cuts.

I could do with getting a new LED torch; any chance of a shot of it (its beam against a wall or something) with no other lights on? I have a 25 LED one which is bright as it is :)

5W Luxeons are the ones to get.

Or if you want something as powerful as a 2/5/10 million candlepower but more portable, search for diving lights. The latest ones use 35W HID bulbs.

I have the 4 million candle torch. When I say it's bright I mean it's extremely bright. You can feel the heat from it from 20 feet away!

I couldn't like to see the 10 million candle one.
You'd be amazed how little difference you'd notice. Its in the realms of pointless. Just means your battery goes flat quicker.

Nice, I have seen those around on the bay, though thought it rather odd to use so many 5mm LEDs over a single luxeon type.

I have some 5mm ultrabright reds here (300mw or so), very small viewing angle, but extremely bright on axis. I also have a 3watt luxeon element which has the much larger viewing angle but doesn't really appear much brighter on axis, just spreads the light more.

I'm looking at getting a Fenix L2T, takes 2 AA's which I can buy some rechargable AA's cheap.

Though does anyone know of cheap sites for CR123 batteries? Not sure whether I would want rechargable, depends how cheap you can get one use cells, torch lasts 1.75 hours on one. If so I would be very tempted by the Fenix P1 or maybe get the CR123 body for the Fenix L2T.

Both of them are 55 lumens.

Bear in mind rechargeable AA's tend to be 1.2v as opposed to the 1.5v of alkaline construction. Depending on the internal circuitry of the torch, it may not work with rechargeables at all (the other possibility being it works just fine, depends if it uses a DC-DC convertor). I think i've seen CR123 on the bay quite often, not sure if they are good price though. I'd go with rechargeable if you use CR123 lithiums.

The luxeon costs about the same as the 100 LED's and the circuitry is a lot more compliated so its a lot cheaper overall to just use lots of normal LED's. :)

I never appreciated a good torch until I got my maglight as a present. Doesn't exactly fit in my pocket but it is a substantial piece of kit, it feels like if the need arose I could knock someone clean out with it and still light my path home :D :p

Hmm hadn't thought of that! Will have to see what Fenix say about using rechargable AA's.

exactly why my maglight is kept in the doorpocket of my car! for using in the engine bay when my car breaks every other week and for beating any people trying to rob me! :D

Thought about upgrading your maglite to luxeon LED? Will make it brighter than the standard bulb.

Also, so what do people recommend for ~£25 then. Want something roughly the size of a Maglite AA. Is the likes of the Fenix P1 the best for the money? Don't mind custom torches by the way.

i love threads like this...where else could you have a 35 post discussion on torches hehe OCF rocks !!!
