Further to this thread, I sold the Skyline today for asking price. I'll be absolutely gutted to see it go when the new owner picks it up, but that's life.

To replace it I was looking for something cheap, reliable and fun. I didn't really have a particular car in mind, just something that fills those criteria. Having said that I did fancy a 205 Mi16, but the only ones I could find were up the other end of the country. So I kept browsing PH and came across this:

It's a 1986 8v GTI with the following:

PAS fitted from a later GTI
90 spec interior with no saging or rips in the normal places
15" Ronal Turbo wheels with toyo t1s tyres
Lowered allround on Bilsteins
Jetex exhuast
K&N panel filter
Uprated TSR gear linkages
Big bumper conversion
Single headlamp grill with deleted badge and cross headlamps

It wasn't too far from me, was cheap and I liked the looks of it so this afternoon I went and took a look.

First impressions are the car is in absolutely fantastic shape for it's age, it has had a proper bare-metal strip-down respray and has been waxoyled, and apart from a small dent on the bonnet it's in supurb condition, especially considering it's a ~22-year-old car. It has every MOT from new, and has an almost 100% service history, and loads of reciepts.

I took it for a drive and what an absolute hoot :D

Yes, it's dog-slow compared to what I'm used to but it has so much character and sounds great. It feels taut and responsive and is very kart like. There are no creature comforts, it's noisy and creaky, the dash is pure 80's german slab, but I really liked the car, it's huge fun.

So I put a deposit down and will be picking it up next weekend after the new owner of the Skyline has picked it up.

Immediate plans are stripped interior and a cage, then depending how long I keep it perhaps and engine swap for something more fruity.

I'm looking forward to chucking it round combe

Looks good mate...i'm sure there will be a few quid left from the Skyline sale for a daily runner too...and a 20v Turbo lump...
:D

like the car but not the cosmetic mods. Think I would have probably taken a 205GTI over this or even better a Mk1 MR2 but horses for courses. It does look like fun.

I love this look for the Mk2 although the Ronal Turbos look out of place. Needs fussier wheels.

Looks tidy, and power isn't everything. The handling will be awesome fun:

I do a little. I'd be tempted to replace it with a GTi boot with the spoiler.

You two are taste-less Plymouth gayers ;)

I like the smooth spoilerless bum.

I tell you what is fail though, the wife has christened it 'Dexter'

I shall say I agree, looks like it belongs on an idiot modern small car belonging to a youngen, whereas the rest of the car looks pretty nice from those images :)

Ninja: Oh, shall I move to Plymouth? :D

I don't like it cosmetically (I prefer small bumpers to big bumpers, not a huge fan of the 3 bar grille, don't really like smoothed bootlids, Crosshair headlamps I just can't make my mind up) other than the Ronal Turbos which I love.

Interesting to see someone went to the bother of 90 speccing the arches, sills, door mouldings but not the door glass!

Took Kate's out for a good hoon today after replacing the radiator, forgot how throwable the Golf Mk2 is. Not as exciting as the 205 but much more forgiving. Hers needs stiffening up a bit now and it'll feel nice and tight.

Enjoy it!

To be honest I knew the looks would be controversial when I posted it, especially the boot. But the looks aren't the main reason I've bought it, apart from the fact that it's huge fun to drive it's the overall condition and history which has made me put that deposit down. That and the ronal turbos ;)

Oh, I paid £1100 for it.

As above, not really a fan of the smoooooth boot. Hate the wheels, you must hate them too and everyone else hates them so i'll do you a favour and buy them off you!! :D

Let us know when you go to 'Combe :)

BTW was it you DreXeL that had the white Teg with Spoon stickers? As I saw it or an identical one at Wickes yesterday.
