My new toy!

This day is just getting better, Ive just got the car insured for a sodding paltry £180, classic cover with aon (mileage limited to 3k a year).

 How old are you? :p

Dup - out of interest, why have you discounted the 1.6? No harm in looking for a 1.8, you just seem pretty set that's all :)

It'll cost me £150 more to insure a Mk1 MX5 than it would to insure my CTR. Just goes to show how much insurance groups (13 and 16 respectively) mean. That makes it £1500 to insure with me and the other half on there. 25 next year though, hopefully a clean license 1 more NCD will bring things down to a respectable level.

Howard - The 1.8 is closer to my CTR on paper, that's why. I'm very much accustomed to the CTRs 200ish bhp. Although the MX-5 is 200kg lighter, its up to 70bhp less powerful in 1.8 guise. I might look into something. If I get the oppertunity I'll try a 1.6, but it's hard enough finding any Mk1/Mk2 MX5 to test drive from a trade seller.

Come to the southern meet and I'll take you for a blast in mine - the performance belies the engine size a little :) There isn't a lot in it between the 1.6 and early 1.8s, some of the 1.8s are a bit heavier due to bracing as well so that further diminishes it

32, so not ancient quite yet, the mileage limitation helps, plus its an extra 15% for being a member of MX5OC.

Yeah, but they have bigger brakes as standard plus they generally have stronger internals and slightly longer gearing from what I have read. I do plan to go the FI route once I've got the work on my house sorted, and having the 1.8 initially should make things easier.

I still need to drive one yet. For me it's the most logical step forward considering the budget I have in mind. I'd get a charged one from the get go, but my current insurance does not accomodate mods under 25.

I'm also considering waiting a bit longer to get a Mk2 instead but I'm still looking up the potential advantages (but I do prefer the styling and interior from looks alone).

If I could make it down south I would, but I might catch a cold or something :p

The earlier 1.6's are the better engines, the later ones were down on power by quite a bit. This 1.8 of mine can rev for england, such a punchy engine.

An Mk1 will be eligiable for classic cover, go to a company that specializes in classics and you may be suprised. I know you don't live in a fantastic postcode but a classic policy makes my insurance hilariously cheap at 17, and less than half what it would be if I went on a "normal" policy. You would not accrue NCB on it, though.

i like mx-5s think that you should recover the roof in white cause I think that it will look good. £300 is a great price for it. You should be able to get a nice return if your gonna sell it once youve done.

You do with Aon.But yes most dont allow you to acrue NCB.

Oh, that's something to consider for next years renewal. Footman James (who I am with) are part of Aon and I won't be getting anything at the end of this year. Ah well, £650 for a 17 year old still can't be argued with ;)

Nah I prefer the black, might even get some blinging black alloys and a carbon bonnet:p

White ones look hot with a few tweaks:

Sadly the most effective way for me to insure the MX5 is to add it to my current policy and wait 6 months to get a more apt policy start modding as and when I get free money for it. A lot of small brokers won't insure my post code (its not a rough area, it's just fat too close to Blackburn and insurers hate Blackburn more than major cities and Afghanistan it seems). Thanks for the heads up though, worth a shot if I get a Mk1. Things might change when I'm 25.

I did that when I got mine. Added it to my Admiral policy and went Multicar - and went to HIC which are more specialist when I renewed :) They dont' charge for mods that don't increase horsepower by a measurable amount

Ive given it a quick machine polish and it has come up surprisingly well, Im very happy with the paint, the rear brake discs look shot tho and ive found a snapped drop link, apart from that it is mechanically perfect, I could do with some new tyres tho, the old ones are crappy maxlinkangdingdongs.

Now a question to you experts the insurance company have given me the option of either having a market value or a agree value, how do I get a proper valuation for it?
