Hey All,

I thought I'd make the idea for my next build public to take advantage of all of your expertise!

It's been a few years since I've built or even upgraded anything, but this project has a purpose.

The Build
I'm not a gamer, I'm a computer programmer and I'm likely to be running VMs and using pretty heavy compilation software, statistical analysis software, machine learning, etc.
I'd like to keep the build around the £1000 mark if possible...
So far, this is coming in at around £1200, so any cost saving tips would be appreciated.
What I really want though are suggestions, recommendations and a compatibility sense check!

AMD Ryzen™ 7 2700X
I've been an "Intel Guy" for years now. For no good reason of course. My justification for this is the high core count.

ASUS PRIME X470-PRO
I'm not too fussed on all the RGB hype, but I don't want an ugly mobo! Packed with plenty of features as far as I'm concerned.

16GB (2x8GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX Black, PC4-21300 (2666)
The spec is 16GB, to be honest I have no justification for this particular make/model though.

ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 DUAL OC 3GB GDDR5 VR Ready Graphics Card, 1152 Core, 1569MHz GPU, 1785MHz Boost
Like I said, I'm not a gamer. BUT what I do want is to be able to hook up 2 DisplayPort monitors :)

256GB Samsung PM981, M.2 (2280)
I'll stick the OS on this. Maybe a few of the larger programming suits.

1TB WD Blue WD10EZEX SATA III 6GB/s 7200rpm 64MB Cache 8ms OEM HDD
I won't fill this too quickly.

650W Cooler Master MasterWatt 650, Hybrid Modular, 80 PLUS Bronze
To be honest, I don't know if 650 is 'too much', but I like modular PSUs, I recognise the brand and it was reasonably priced!

ASUS PCE-AC68 Dual-band Wireless AC1900 PCI-E Adapter with 3 Antennas
No hard wires for me I'm afraid!

Microsoft Windows 10 Professional, 64-bit
I've gone for pro so I can use Remote Desktop... But then again, I guess I could use something like VNC?

NZXT Source 340 Compact Black Mid Tower Case with Side Window
I like the minimalist style, the colour, the window, the brand. Other than that, I'm not too picky.

Not sure why that's all coming in at £1200, I'd say it should be under a grand. The Windows license can certainly be saved on. Plenty of people have used codes available for £5-10 which work fine.

Is there not a cheaper graphics card with two DP ports? That's certainly overkill if you really won't game or do rendering etc. You might even find a budget card that you can fit two of, though it seems a bit of a hack.

If you find the items on the OCUK website you can share your basket here for a breakdown.

So that graphics card isn't the one you mentioned before, a 3GB would certainly come in cheaper. Does a 1050/Ti not offer multiple DP?

The PSU is a reasonable power limit but not the most respected range (but not bad). Is modular a requirement? You could save cash, upgrade quality, maybe both. If you won't use the GPU much then you can probably go below 500W comfortably.

Do you really need the high end WiFi? Cheaper cards work fine, and cables work even better for much cheaper ;)

The RAM seems pretty expensive considering it's quite slow. I'd say £160 is last year prices, for 2666MHz you should be able to find it closer to £100. But faster RAM is recommended for Ryzen.

If you're not doing any serious overclocking you could certainly save money on the motherboard.

Yea I couldn't find an exact match for the card on OC. But I agree, that GPU cost needs to come right down. I'll do some digging.
I was only going modular to keep things tidy, but no, its not a requirement, again, I'll do some digging.
And nope, I don't need the high end wifi card either, I saw it as recommended in CustomPC magazine haha. I'll get to work finding a replacement.
I'll see if I can get some cheaper 3000 RAM too whilst I'm at it.

What do you think about going down to B450 on the mobo?

Also, thanks a lot for your help.

Have you had a look at the second hand markets for dual-CPU Dell & HP workstations? Maybe even quad CPU systems if you have access to Windows 10 Pro for Workstations.
