I got my Q6600 this morning, unfortunately I wont be building the PC till xmas as its a present from my better half, however I was wondering if anyone has experience with batch L740A761 given I cant OC it myself for another month?

Also I notice the heat spreader has marks on it, is that normal for a new OEM chip - Not bought from OCUK I should add as I had to bundle it up with other gear :(

I would get your other halve to allow U to build it now, if faulty or fault's develope get it back asap. otherwise u may have to send it back faulty for a replacement only ie after 28 days,
always test it well within the 28 days etc

my thoughts, anyone with more info to add etc ...

Emlyn_Dewar - Cheers, that's put my mind at rest!

siege2 - I had wondered about that aspect, maybe a good bargaining chip with the wife :D Although shouldn't the normal RMA rules still apply? i.e return the item if its fault and get a new one in its place so long as its still under the minimum 12 month warranty?

Sepulchre,

You have a lot to learn young jedi, Yes the normal rules apply, but when you want to have a play with your new toys now, ;) they dont ;) lol

not having a go at you but.... if you ask me it wasn't the best idea to buy it now. As Siege2 says, if something is faulty you'll have a problem and if you would've bought it later you could also have a bit of a better price ya know :)

yes u have your UK 12 months to send it back to a retailer, if its a television then after 30 days it back to ie Samsung for them to repair it U still have your 1 years on it

this may also be the case off washing machines, fridges etc

think the the retail intel not oem have 3 year's.. any ideas ..ammendments etc anyone ...

Unless your wife is clued up on CPU's just take you old one out and get the quad in there. Then let her wrap the old one up and just look suprised when you open it. It will also give you time on Christmas day to play you favorite games when she thinks your installing your new toy.;)

And we have a winner!!!!!!

;)

a fine plan, but blown out the water by my current opty 165/939 system lol. I'm building a whole new system on the 27th (away for xmas...gah!)

Vir - no offence taken, the whole rma aspect wasn't something I even considered tbh. As for price, I think I got a pretty decent deal ;)

Okay mate! Nice to hear you have a good deal, think you should be fine though!
haha croni486's idea is brilliant!

I did exactly that last year when i got the two opty 285's for my board.:D

She was none the wiser and i'm sure i'll be doing something similar this year.

With regard to the marks on the HSF, I got this response to my query with the supplier (again this is NOT OCUK).

Further to the e-mail I can confirm that as Intel do not ship OEM CPU's directly for sale to end users it is entirely possible that these CPU's have been installed into a machine, these machines could then have been sold on to a third party and broken down and sold off as parts. This is why the CPU IHS may have marks that come from an HSF.

This I find very worrying!

oh yes this is one of the big etailors.

Ordinarily I only buy from OCUK and discussing such things as this on their forums I feel not to good about :(

Heres some previous thread where this has been discussed, it's so common for there to be minor marks on the chips that it's not a big deal. Of course, the tin-foil hats come out and it's a cherry-picking conspiracy, or the "I've got an inferior chip now *insert angry face*" complaints start.
In reality it'll work and it'll clock the same as the rest of them. :)

Here's a singled out bit of interest, could be excuse or could be truth.
retailer said:
"These are received by ourselves on large blue trays from Intel which have square holders from the tray above that secure the CPU on the tray below for transit, this can explain the marks you see on your chip that may occur if the chip is not perfectly seated on the tray."

I'd found 2 of the 3 threads there Emlyn, and one thing I do notice is that they are all quite recent, all in November in fact, so maybe its just a new phenomenon....runs for tin foil hat :D

OK I'll not worry too much lol, but being told that they may well have been installed into systems and then broken into parts doesn't sound great does it?
