My Q6600 arrived :D

Hi sepulchre

anyhows :-) enjoy building your computer up If your not back on the forums before then Enjoy Christmas your new PC oh and the New Year :D

I'm still in two minds about sending it back simply because of the response I received from the supplier regarding the fact it could be from a computer broken down for parts.

I thought I'd post a pic of the IHS, the bit that concerns me is the horizontal line runnign above the intel text.

"The moral of this story is now matter how good the deal is~it is not necessarily its worth"

Just looked at that pic. It would appear the CPU has been used. The imprint marks of a previous heat sink are clearly evident as well as (horizontal lines running across).

With regard to the marks on the HSF, I got this response to my query with the supplier (again this is NOT OCUK).

Further to the e-mail I can confirm that as Intel do not ship OEM CPU's directly for sale to end users it is entirely possible that these CPU's have been installed into a machine, these machines could then have been sold on to a third party and broken down and sold off as parts. This is why the CPU IHS may have marks that come from an HSF.

This I find very worrying!

I bet you a dollar that this particular CPU was part of a batch a person used to find a decent over clocker. This CPU didn't perform, or reach over clocking expectation and was put back/ returned

Personally i would return it ask for a refund and buy from OCUK

My recent brand new retail boxed E2180 had marks on the heatspreader. As said before, they have to be tested in the factory at some stage, which is bound to leave marks.

Don't get me wrong here guys, it wasn't so much cheaper than OCUK, actually only a few quid, and from what should be a reputable retailer. Had I not being buying other items to build an entire new rig which cumulatively saved a few quid I would have stuck with OCUK, moral here is stick with the suppliers you know and have had good service from in the past.

Amen to that;)

thats fine if it does but it will be in sealed retail box from intel, so any marks will be from Intel themselves. I'm not doubting what everyone is saying about cpu's bearing marks but this is heavily marked and as far as i'm concerned has been in a pc before. Add to that the suppliers admission "it is entirely possible that these CPU's have been installed into a machine" means I'm not entirely at peace in beliveing this chip is fresh from the factory.

Those marks are very common, all the chips i've had have had them. OEM chips though should have a sticker on the IHS saying 'remove before installation' if yours didn't then it may have been used before. That was the most recent batch i've seen, wonder how well they will clock.
