My Rally Project

Well despite much fiddling and fart-arsing around I still wasn't happy with the handbrake actuation.

So I spent hours thinking over various options to modify, construct and adapt the lever, studied existing rally cars, discussed the matter with my peers....

And by jove I think I have found the solution:

Okay so I cheated and solved the problem by using my wages instead of my brain, but what the hell. This should give me plenty of leverage, and means I can keep the MOT man happy with my cable handbrake which now won't have to interfere with the hydraulic setup :D

Yeah a T piece and a line to each rear wheel. Cable stays for MOT use and that's about it really.

Decided I'd better do a test fit before I started drilling as I had a feeling that space would be a bit tight.

Lucky I did!

As you can see I've had to cut away part of the handbrake lever cover (which I will neaten up later) and bend the arm to the left

Oh and I tried out my flaring tool, seems to work okay

I did indeed!

Progress at the moment is tedious. I can't do any permanent work until I have washed the carpets out, and I'm putting that off because they'll never dry in this weather.

Bit of fiddling done though.

I remember a couple of tricks used on the Uno. Not sure if they're any use to you but I'll say it anyway:

All this was done after buying the car as last years championship winner:

Before paint (originally it had bad war wounds and it was yellow), the roof skin was ground down to about 1/3 the original thickness. Roll cage took up the structure.

Rules said 4cm from the lowest point of the car to the ground, this was the exhaust, we heated it and bent it up out the way. Next lowest was the gearbox, ground the bottom off the bell housing and tilted the engine on its mounts (Rules said engine had to be "on the original engine mounts", but said nothing about it being fitted properly). Everyone spent that season trying to stick their mits between out wheels and looking under the car.
 
Shame I don't have a garage big enough to keep it in :o I'll have to disassemble it every time I've finished using it. At least it's only a few bolts.
 
Same problem here, I struggle to store the tools I do have, ive got a garden shed full and quite a few in the house too.
Dont have a garage unfortunatly :(, do have a access to a ramp if I need one though :).
 
Man carry on with the 205 legacy... it is the ultimate Road Rally car ever.

Me and my old m8 used to rally a few years back. We used to rally in the Pennine stages with a J reg 205. but the name was about all that was standard about the car. It was a 205 granted but it had nicely nestled under the bonnet was a MI16 motor out of a 405 and we also stuck the 4x4 running gear off an MI 4x4 on it too. had it totally stripped of course with a custom fuel tank in the rear and custom 18 point cage (both built by us:D)

It bloody flew especially after we lightened everything further and stuck it on a set of 45s instead of injection.. and man the noise!!!:D

unfortunately it sounded a lot better before we stuffed it into a tree@ 100 mph in wales... not much was left after that but what a thrill..

apart from the broken wrist it was quite possibly the best thrill buzz ive ever had! Good job m8:D

Is it not a fold up one is it? Looks almost the same as the one I used when I killed my 306's engine. Could just drop the arm down to be inline with the ram's upriight, and the stability legs fold up to be upright.

Never any point in keeping it open and out all of the time as space is always an issue. The garage I work on my cars in takes 4 cars, and has lots of extra space, but the engine crane is always folder up, out the way...but then I think it's only been used 2 or 3 times, always a good investment though. :)

Nah it doesn't collapse, I was going to get a 1 tonne foldable but the 2 tonne fixed was about the same price so I decided to get as much lifting power as I could for the cash.

I'm going through a serious "meh" phase at the moment

The garage roof is leaking ever so slightly and the water has got in one of my strip lights making it buzz on and off all the time.

I've made a hash of cutting holes in the bulkhead and I'm going to have to finish them off slowly with a dremel or something

I need to wash the carpet but it's always rainy and cold and it'll never dry

I think I just need a big push and get my arse in gear. Getting the engine in will be a huge boost I hope, give me a bit of momentum to finish it. Never mind L1J's deadline of Jan 4th, the Volvo runs out of tax at the end of Jan and I have no intention of renewing it so it's GOT to get done!
 
I'm sure that is foldable...it looks it anyway...remove the pins to the front/engine end, rotate the leg up via the other pin, and insert the front pin in the higher of the two slots behind the brace. Obviously the ram can just be collapsed/relased.
Unless of course those holes that I think arefor holding the legs out of the way is for struts.

Oh yeah you can fold the legs up like that, but it still won't fit in the garage along with the car (not with the current amount of crap in the garage anyway!) so I still have to disassemble it :)
 
Don't know/care. Not a huge amount really considering it's been spread over the best part of 8 years and 2 cars :)
