Had my current RX8 for nearly 4 years and loved every minute of it (she's a 2006 limited edition 1/400 made). She blew a bearing last year which totaled engine... so we slapped new one in, been perfect ever since. Then over the last few months been toying with a new car... however, I just can't get rid of her and there's just nothing out there at the moment that really flicks my switch. So decided to start getting her A1 and pristine instead.

Roxy Front1640.jpg

So, based on lots of stone chips, tiny dings and usual stuff, she's getting some love in the form of:

  • Whole underbody rust removed, treated with various goodies then sealed. Remove front and rear subframe, engine, gearbox, front and rear body work etc, anything I can, treat and some of it powder coat or paint metallic purple and silver for details.
  • D2 6pot calipers and 356mm drilled discs
  • Get body work A1 Respray
  • RX7 340bhp Conversion

Even though in the picture below she looks perfect, obviously as the owner you know all the little bits and bobs that just annoy you... and rather than touch bits up... I'm not like that as I like my card mechanically and body wise perfect.

So, rather than do outside, it's the underneath that has been done first. This was a lot of work and I've split the picture up into Before, During and After Pictures. Hope you like.

However it's disgusting how a car that has covered 72k miles can rot so badly in 10 years all because the factory doesn't underseal the cars correctly! The underneath if left for another 4-5 years would be welding territory, which is a disgrace... just zero sealent, where sheet metal joins no sealent inbetween... basically between engines blowing and rot from below, I predict around 50% of all RX8's off the road within 5 years.

Anyhow, enjoy below pictures... to give you a clue just how much has been done. As stuff gets done I'll post more and more over the next year.

Looks great :).

Did you send that to a specialist or do you have access to that garage? I started looking at all the RX7's RX8's and is that a Datsun 240k/skyline in the back too?

Not sure they'd enjoy me hijacking the whole thread with 60+ pictures considering it's a what you've done to you car today and this took 3 weeks.

Silver Fern Performance up in North Wales, he does all my work on all 3 cars so... think there is a red RX7, an RX4 as welll there.

Wow, that's some serious loving! She's looking very nice, must be worth at least a grand now! :p
Lol, yeah well we all know what we spend on cars we don't get back. However, I love this RX8 so deserves some love. You can't use logic with things like this otherwise no one would ever bother altering cars etc.

yup my 9yo mazda 3 looks as bad underneath.. I totally don't get mazda :o there literally is no undersealing just bare metal!

that must've cost 2k or so do it?

looks great tho, I love that colour and rx8's in general.

Blimey that looks worse underneath than my 1997 Nissan!

Are you going for a single or twin turbo setup for the rx7 engine swap? Also did you ever consider a different enigne? It would be great to hear from you regarding this as I've heard it's a bit of a nightmare to get the electrics working correctly with an engine swap on the RX8's? If this were not the case then I'd love to swap an SR20 in there

The colour is quite peculiar, I'm not sure I've ever seen another RX in this shade, any other pictures of it in natural light?

Probably single, not decided on the engine conversion yet, lots of possibilities and that won't be performed until next year as the icing on the cake. Main thing was to get it spot on underneath and on top first...

As for other engines nope, it has to be a Rotary simple as that as this is the heart and soul of a RX, I've seen all sorts of engine conversions, V8's etc and it's just not an RX then may as well have any other car. TBH, getting the wiring to work etc, if you know what your doing you can do anything, it's a matter of getting a proper electronics person in though and not just a mechanic... however... on that note...

Won't be going mental power, want to be useable everyday, so 340 is nice result from RX7 engine, up around 80bhp on standard and not stressing it. Once you start for more, simply too much work... and I want the car to be balanced but quick and around that 340-350bhp is perfect for the chassis.

Here's a picture outside in normal light (click for larger piccie)... it's colour is "Copper Mica Red".

Current Spec is:

Mazda RX8 Evolve Copper Red Mica (2006),
Group B Motorsport Remap,
215bhp@Flywheel (old engine, not had new one dyno'd, this one feels stronger around 220bhp probably),
Group B Backbox,
K&N Panel Filter,
BC Racing BR Coilovers 45mm drop,
Mazda Aero Splash Guards/Body Kit,
Pearl Gun Metal Alloys with 15mm Spacers,
Crossdrilled/Grooved Front/Rear Discs, EBC Yellow Stuff Pads,
HEL Red/Steel Braided Hoses,
Red LED Footwell Lighting,
Red LED door/dome/map lights

Loving it. It's looking very smart on the driveway.

I recently picked up a 2016 Maz 3 fastback.

The company cannot be faulted for their exterior curves. Just love them. However, seems like I will be making sure that I trade up before things get too messy underneath.

Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Fair play that's a lot of work and well done for doing it properly as otherwise like you say in 5 years time there'll be no RX8's left at all!

What's making you go for the K sport brakes out of interest, just i've not really heard many god reports of them long term?

yeah but those to buy alone cost more! :) they go for what 7-15k? never mind restoring one

Indeed. Always wanted an RX7 but in honesty the RX8 follows similar footsteps in being a lightweight and poised coupe with the benefits of an updated cabin and a bit of practicality.

Keep us updated with the probject

Ahhh I'll have to change actually as going 6 Pot D2's, funnily enough tbh, I've heard great reviews from both, however the thing that swung it for me is 8 Ports tbh won't give any benefit on the road for me over 6's, and the D2's have a fully crossdrilled disc which I wanted and not grooved. TBH I've seen a few people with either and they've had for a few years without problems. Strange that some people have but I assume same with anything.

Yeah well, cheers for saying that as tbh I could've just ran it into the ground but I can't do that with cars, won't do it with the JEEP or the Xedos 9. Always spent money to keep every top notch.

As for why not "invest" in an RX7, basically because I don't like them, tiny cramped cabins, the RX8 I've used as a family car, better inside and equiped and IMHO better looking, but that's just me. The one thing the RX8 was always crying out for was more power. It's not slow sodon't startme on that but the chassis can handle so much more... with 340bhp this thing would certainly be up there aroud a track with anything around the £40k mark nowadays, Golf R's, Focus, AMG A45's etc... just needs that extra power is all and I know the car can take it easily.

192/231 depending on revision
And neither came out the factory with anywhere near close to that, was all a lie. Mine is a 231 6 Speed with the extras... it was originally dynoed at 181bhp... I thought someone was having a laugh, after investigating thats around what the RX8 had mid 180's for the high output version and around 145-150bhp for the lower power output, weird as it always felt way quicker than that... so to get 215bhp I had to remap, decat and rear box and filter to get it into the 200's and it's still way down on what Mazda claim they have. Mazda have a history of over inflated power figures...

However, I've done 0-60 and recorded 6.3s myself with a knackered clutch and zero talent rofl, so it's there or there abouts.

That's about right as you usually expect to lose circa 15% between the flywheel HP and wheel hp. More in a 4wd vehicle.

Sounds like he is quoting figures at fly though - pretty much all dyno print outs will give you a converted number from the wheels.

Plus even then he standard car would have been about 210bhp than 230 - given how wildly high some runs tend to be it would still be poor
