My RX8 Restoration Thread

Hi Guys,
Well, the engine threw anotehr bearing in February 2019, but she's back on the roadas can be seen.

So, got new body parts etc, however due to other things coming up as they do, they're in boxes in the garage and she's not be re-sprayed yet unfortunatley!

Just been looking at the thread and the work looks great! I've got an RX8 and been told I've got corrosion on underside sub frames and suspension and would like to try get it sorted. What sort of cost was it for you to have your underside treated?

Not 100% if just me, but pictures seem borked.

I know you had a Xedos9 Miller - have you still got it and if so is it still running.

Good job on the RX8.

Howdy matey, yep it's still running fine, however it's SORN at the minute as I'm running 3 cars (RX8, Saab 93 and 350z) so she's on the drive just waiting to be unleashed again but yes she's running :-)

Glad to hear that - I miss mine but unfortunately I bought a dog - hadn't had the valve seals done under warranty.
It was also only used once a week so was getting expensive.

Thanks for the update :)

Mine were starting to rust as well but I managed to buy a front and rear subframe in great condition for £60 each. They have been prepped and will be swapped onto the car in the next couple of weeks hopefully.

Well the day has come, Roxy is being sold :(. Just slapped MOT on her and it's time to say bye bye.... there will be a tear in the eye when she goes but all good things come to an end :-( This is probably one of the last sunny pictures of her from late September 2020 I think it was... don't think the sun has been out since lol

That colour is stunning -I would shed a tear as well - what a nice looking motor
Yeah it's the best colour, Copper Mica Red and when it gets dusk and she's waxed up it looks stunning... but time to say goodbye now. Got the SRT8 now which does everything I need it to.... time for someone else to have some fun lol

Years ago i owned an RX8 for 5 years was about the longest time i ever owned a car for :)
I loved it & Hated it :p (Almost every time you turn that key your thinking is it going to start :D:D:D)

But boy did i love the sound of it ;) and it was so nice to drive :)
I always laugh at people that go on about how much fuel they burn as i now own a 2016 Focus ST 2.0 now and there really not that much difference in MPG between them (Focus only gives me about 2mpg more)

Wish more cars had the RX8 suicide type doors with no pillar

Well, RX8 sold, had a muppet on ebay messing me around after winning the bid then said I only deserved £800 less and I shoudl accept this offer... incredible. So then I got a geneuine buyer who really wanted iot and he's coming up Tuesday for pickup and a lovely drive home. Seems to really want it and understands the engines and frailties etc... so, she's going :-( Had a loo, I've actually owned 9 years now... this is like losing a child lol

I've had two of them in my time, still my overall favourite car. Neither of mine let me down, on fact their technically the most reliable cars I've had.

Fingers crossed the RX9 hybrid direct injection one does eventually get made.

If my MX5 gets used as little as I think it will once our little one arrives I'm actually quite tempted to get an RX8 as a toy car. It would be used for a couple of thousand miles a year (or less) on occasional decent length (30 miles each way) trips so the hot start issues and thirst (for fuel and oil) shouldn't be a problem.

I want to keep 'something' to hang my interest in cars on but I've got a company car + wife's car to actually rely on for getting places. At the same time I don't really want to be diverting proper money away from more important things like a bricks and mortar purchase so it will come down to whether low mileage, rust free mk1 MX5 money buys a decent one.

Yeah, have to admit, this in the 8-9 years odd owning really hasn't caused me any problems. I mean... it's never broken down say because of, electrics, things snapping and breaking or anything tbh... I agree, the in theory the most unreliable car of it's era has been for me, the most reliable as well!

I'd keep the MX5, it'll cost less hahaha

I think these are one of the most underrated cars ever. Yes to a normal sane person they are madness but as a bit of fun second car and a bit of mechanical knowledge they are a fun proposal.

If it breaks you could take the engine out in the palm of your hand :p.

Still really miss mine. Much fun and reasonably practical too. Would love another one. Velocity Red again with the red and black interior please :D (and I don't even mind the chrome wheels ).

Only non service item that needed doing on mine in 8-9 years and about 70'000 miles, was a drop link on the front left, which is a known weakness. No mechanical breakdowns at all. Most reliable car I've ever owned....

Well she went today to a really nice guy who came up from London way. Within 2 minutes he'd ripped the exhaust off hahaha on some local road works that I didn't know were even there lol, so we took it to my guy who welded back on.

The highs and lows of lowered cars lol. Anyhow, he's got her home safely and enjoyed the drive home so, hopefully she'll have a long life with someone else. It;s a shame I've not got the time to get her back to A1, but I've got to reduce the cars now... running 4 cars is over £2k in road tax alone... and even I'm getting cheesed off with that lol. So end of a journey, hopefully he gets a fair few miles on her and smiles per miles :-) And worst case scenario, lets say the engine blew up in 20k miles... the brakes and kit on it he could recoup 60% of the cost back unlike most RX8's so as far as I see for a buyer, it's a win win.

Now time for the SRT8 ;-)
