i cant figure this one out,

ever since ive had CF the second gfx card hits 100% gpu load and stays there.. until i launch GPU Z, i cant think why it does this, its only ever the second card and its 100% solid, no dips or whatever

this is reported in my gpu observer gadget and MSI after burner, the % drops down to 0 after gpuZ

i have tried 2 6950s from different brands exactly the same result so it must be software, both are shader unlocked

is really annoying having to launch gpu z every time i start the PC

EDT, the card performs as it should after gpu-z is launched with heaven benchmarks in 2000s

are you sure it actualy is at 100% maybe its a gadget bug? leave GPU-Z closed wait abit and see if the card actualy does get hot, my guess is that the gadget is having issues

Daft suggestion maybe, but have you swapped the cards round to see if the problem persists?
Looking at your screen shot, the temp seems low for running flat out. Does this temp/fan increase if you leave it?
Did you disable ulps?
Have you tried switching Aero off and running W7 Basic?

theres been a xfx and an asus in that space, no difference,

the card idles at 40 so that 100% is 20C hotter, but yes when gaming that gives like 70 if its 100%, but that could be cause the 1st card is contributing, they are 4mm apart, it never gets much above 60, do the fans drop and increase? yes, they are at 1277 now

havent tried running basic, soon as gpuz launches it stops

Not saying it is.
The way I see it, if your fault finding, then you have to rule things out.
If the suggestions above don't make a difference then the first thing I would do is flick the switch and check if that's the cause.
Second thing I would try is take out the top card and check if the single card in 2nd pci-e slot sits at idle when on the desktop. If that's fine then you can rule out a faulty pci-e lane.

It's definitely not a faulty pcie lane because I ran a card in that slot before going cf

I guess I'll have to click the switch what gets me is the same thing has happened on 2 separate gfx cards, makes me feel it's software or motherboard

If it's still the same after you flick the switch.
Try: run msconfig>General>Diagnostic startup>apply and reboot and try that.

Mine does exactly the same, only thing that works is enabling then disabling crossfire in CCC (which only works up until I turn the pc off). This only started after trying to find some drivers to fix the negative crossfire scaling... really tempted to sell up thanks to AMD's **** DRIVERS!!

Touch wood mines doesn't have that problem, I have only used 11.2's and 11.4 preview though. So far xfires been kind to me(only hope I haven't jinxed it).
Are you guys using the unlocked shaders only? As I chucked them as I could only get 1 card to unlock CCC limits with smart doctor.
The 2nd card refused point blank to unlock CCC limits even though smart doctor was reporting that it had.
Anyway I reflashed them with the His 6970 turbo bios as it runs at 1.15v instead of 1.175v and the CCC limits go to 1000MHz/1500MHZ and I just use stock 6970 clocks unless going for some benchies and all is sweet so far.

Be careful with the 6970 bios, borks the memory on 6950's mate

I know shayper, being careful. The way I see it, some 6950's are very good, proper 6970's with lower power going through them.

From TPU:
'The overclocks of our card are 920 MHz core (15% overclock) and 1600 MHz Memory (28% overclock). I was able to reach those clocks, no matter if the card was in HD 6950 mode or in HD 6970 mode with all shaders enabled. A memory clock of 1600 MHz is spectacular and something I've never seen before. The highest memory clock so far was 1450 MHz on some HD 5770 cards - and those used exactly the same memory chips as the HD 6950 PCS++.'

As I had my 1st one at 1GHz on the core @1.25v, now that's way above the 6970 bios clocks/volts and it was all good. At your clocks 950/1450, that's above stock 6970 too.

As the tpu review of the pcs++ shows, it's just your luck on whether you get a good one.
I also believe that many folks in here have/still cast the doubt over the full 6970 flash/memory killer and the 'not all 6950's unlock' as some are fanbois who hate to see the other team come up with a cracking card.

I think it's a Windows issue. I have 2x 5850 in Crossfire. Everything was running fine as MSI Afterburner reported. Checked 1 day as the fans sounded loud. Card 2 wasn't under load but was running at default clocks (not in power saving mode) and fan speed of 54%.
Tried different ATI drivers, different version of MSI Afterburner. It made no difference. Launch GPU-Z and the second card dropped to idle and fan speed dropped to what was set up in the fan profile with MSI Afterburner.
Close GPU-Z, 5 seconds later second card goes back to full clocks and fan speed.

ULPS was enabled in the registry, no change when I tried it on or off.

I then put back a system image I made a week earlier with Acronis True Image. Cards behaved as normal. I updated all drives checked everything was as it should have been and made another system back up.

Good job as I have had the same problem since with the 11.4 previews on. Had to restore previous image.

theres apparently a similar issue with nvidia cards in SLI running dual (or more) monitors sometimes. Not seen it myself but read about it when I was looking into another problem. Are you running dual monitors?

Yes im running dual monitors that is interesting

Interesting replies I think only a new windows installation is gonna fix it tbh :/

Seriously? I really can't do that as I have maxed out my itunes pc account things...

Is there honestly no other fix?

i havent found one yet, and im not reinstalling windows for some time, unless theres another fix .. hopefully there is, it doesnt sound a very common problem!!

even configuring GPUZ to load at windows start up will do for now
