My son wants an Android - I have some questions

make nobody has ever heard of. also a grey import, possibly? missing AMOLED? and £40 more. sounds like a great phone though for the money. something to get for a 12 year old? i would want something with a proper warranty and support route and cheap as possible. personally I would go down the second hand route if it was for myself oneplus 3 for £220 in the members market for instance. however the lenovo P2 especially with it's battery life and the fact it seems to have everything anyone really needs for £200 seems to be the best choice. the only thing that comes close is the much inferior G5 unless you go for the G5 plus which is then £50 more expensive.

For a first time android user I would go for something conventional with good support over specs, like a moto G5. For best specs per £ I'd get a lenovo zuk z2 for £150 at banggood. Tbh high spec phones are overrated most of the time.

lenovo own motorola FYI so I don't see the difference between a P2 and a G5 other than the G5 is overpriced in comparison. I imagine support on both would be the same as they have likely merged resources rather than operate as 2 completely separate entities. the moto G used to be the budget king and it reigned as so for many years. it's now gotten too expensive IMO for the specs. it's now not worth it unless you have a very strict budget of £150 or less. 4GB of RAM will help the P2 a lot. I know my phone with it's 6GB s now silky smooth. stuff used to overload my s6 edge before, this thing breezes on through.

- make nobody has ever heard of I dont think that's much of an issue
- also a grey import, possibly? nope
- missing AMOLED? doesnt need it. its a 2k ips screen. it's twice the resolution and much better in direct sunlight at the expense of black level performance. You make a compromise at this price, cant have it all.
- and £40 more You did said up to £300...

Anyway im not trying to recommend the Apollo. I wouldnt, not because of the specs or the price though, but because the company are completely useless and support doesnt exist. But that's not the point, pick one of those specs and you'll find it on another phone at the same price point. There's nothing unique about the p2 bar the fact that it's so well rounded at that price. That was the point.

One problem with a Moto G phone is they're supported by Lenovo and in my experience their support is non-existent. I had 2 Moto G4s with the ghost touch problem and one of them wasn't put together very well either as the screen rattled and Lenovo were useless, seemingly using bots to reply to emails. Their support forum is full of problems with platitudes from the supposed 'Experts' rather than solutions.

If you get a good one they're very good. My wife has a G3 and loves it and I have a G4 Dual Sim and it's excellent although I did have a temporary problem with the Nougat update which caused bootloops for a couple of weeks but that seems to be resolved now. I also had the original Moto G and the G2 and apart from the G2 battery draining a bit quick on standby they were fine.

I'm aware that Lenovo own Motorola. My recommendation for the Moto G over the zuk 2 is because the zuk shipped with a fairly rubbish rom, which wouldn't be a problem for someone used to flashing custom roms. I don't know much about the P2, but personally I'd probably rather have the snapdragon 820 cpu.

he probably wants an android because it isn't as locked down.

you can do simple things like bluetooth a mp3 to each other, etc. custom ROM's however at 12, unless he's really techy I imagine it's not the type of thing he's into, you never know though.

OP sounds like a complete apple fanboy though. he could save his whole family around £5000 (slightly exaggerated) a year by switching to the android ecosystem.

the moto g (5th gen) could be a good shout as it probably has more 3rd party support than any other budget phone. however it is lacking in RAM which IMO is what makes a smartphone these days with the amount of apps people run these days. i'd take 4GB of RAM over a slightly better CPU with only 2GB.

That's a good point since most apps are cached and the real difference in performance is experienced in loading apps and swapping through them which comes down to RAM, as opposed to the actual performance of the app which any recent cpu can probably handle with ease. I guess we've come to the point where features probably outweigh specs in terms of value.

i've went from an s6 edge to a oneplus 3 and i'm amazed at the difference 6GB of RAM has made. i even showed a few apple fanboys at work and they were impressed, they thought i was cheating them when i showed how fast fingerprint sensor unlocks, how fast scrolling is, how i can have multiple vids / gifs scrolling at the same time, etc.

So i got my son an LG G3, which was carrier locked and i have no way of unlocking it. so i spoke to my neighbor who gave him an unlocked Galaxy Note 4 Edge, as he's always watering her flowers for her, but unfortunately, that is GSM and his MVNO carrier is CDMA (I'm in the US, if all this means nothing to you lot) So we gave it back with a big thanks..... so i'm in the used market for a phone. I was thinking either a Samsung S6 or an LG G4 both of which seem to be in line with what an iPhone 6S would be.

However the Samsung you cant change the battery (one of the best things about an android) and you cant add a micro sim.. In otherwords they're copying apple with all that nonsense... So maybe it'll be the LG G4 then... as i can pick one up for $100 ! Unless you have any other recommendations ?

I ended up getting him an LG G5.... $175 used in excellent condition. He'll contribute $75 towards the purchase. thx for all the help.
