My turn for an upgrade

Now the 590 has come out it's time to evaluate my options for an upgrade from my 8800GTX (lol).

Few facts: My PSU is an 850W HX Corsair which I'm hoping is enough
I use a 1920x1080 res 27" monitor
Case has brilliant cooling
Unlimited budget, but has to be sensible, 2 580's for example would be nice, but probably cost a little too much unless they're really REALLY worth it.

I'm thinking either a single 590, a single 580 or SLI'd 570's or any other opinion is welcome, also opinions on manufacturers, I hear Gigabyte has a great RMA service, so something like this could very well be an option: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3685#ov

Cheers.

I'd recommend an ATI 5770.

Kust kidding! :D Single 580 is decent but SLI 480's for maximum "bang per buck"

Was thinking of those 2 options, but firstly the 570 SLI is pushing it for my PSU I heard, so the 480 SLI would be cutting it even closer, also the heat.

Not sure on AMD, never owned an AMD card, are the drivers really as bad as people make them out to be? I've heard issues with quite a few games including crossfire issues with Crysis 2 being the most recent, do these get solved quickly normally?

6950 crossfire unlocked to 6970 which is what ive just done, performance is amazing and is much less power hungry than 480s.

Not sure but best bets are they'll address this issue in the next driver update.

I'd recommend a single GTX580, such as the Twin Frozr II, or if you don't mind SLI the GTX460 1GB in SLI will be more than powerful enough for you.

From the ATI point of view, wouldn't 2 x 6950's unlocked to 6970 be better for multi display setup?

well regarding crossfire driver issues, they don't allways get fixed, well sometimes they do but can then break them again on next version, MOH is a game that is broken with crossfire, they fixed it on one release then broke it again and left it broken

This is what I worry about :(

You'd recommend a 580 over 2 570's? How come? Just curious.

Personally i always go for the best single gpu available wait two genes then do the same. Two cards mean more heat and more things to go wrong and generally more power usage!

Im running sli 570 sonic platinum's on a 850w hx running crysis 2 a dream on extreme settings. although the gpu's get hot hot hot!!!!!

I would say either the 6990 (it's the same performance but a whole load cheaper) or a pair of cheaper cards that perform similarly in tandem - GTX570/HD6950(70)?

To be honest a GTX580 would suffice enough for that resolution, the only real reason you'd go for a 6990 or GTX590 is for dual/triple monitor setup, no?

I'm glad you mentioned this, I did some research and found this:

Doesn't look good at all :( That version of the 570 is what I would have gone for.

I was looking at the 580's too, but was thinking ahead for BF3 and was unsure if a single 580 would have enough grunt for the game, even at my res, which is why I was looking at 2 570's for the extra power. Is the 580 lightning worth £50 more than the twin frozr?

I wouldn't worry too much about BF3, it will run fine on a 580, get one for now and when it comes out get another for it if it really needs it

I guess you're right, any particular ones I should look for? I saw the palit 580 which has 3gigs of RAM instead of the normal 1.5, also the Lightning, but seems a little expensive, £80 more than the cheapest 580.

It's been a long time since I've bought a GPU.

from what I understand the more ram the better it is for high resolutions, I suppose it dosn't hurt having plenty of headroom, especially since we have no way of knowing if BF3 will benefit from 3gig of ram, depends if you think the extra £80 is worth it for 1.5gig of ram you may never use lol
