So what kinda of suplements should i be using? Ive started to do a lot of Cross Country Mountain Biking, averaging 14miles+ each run. What you guys suggest? Cheers

Couple of questions:

What is this whole eat a banana that's green, i.e not ripe and pretty rank! Why not ripe as opposed to ripe?

For those in this threas that use Isolate only proteins due to lactose issues, have you found it makes a difference over normal Isolate/Concentrate blends? I've settled on Reflex Natural Whey as it's the one i seem to tolerate best. Although my stomach still sn't fond of it. If there's any gain to using just Isolate (from a lactose tolerance perspective) then i'll switch to it. I'm using Soy Milk with whatever protein anyway...

Just googled "green banana benefits" and came up with this:

Green bananas contain indigestible (to humans) short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that are a favorite food of the cells that make up the lining of the intestines. When these cells are well-nourished and healthy, the body's ability to absorb nutrients such as calcium can increase dramatically.

Research published in the March 2004 issue of Digestive Diseases and Sciences underscores just how much bananas can improve nutrient absorption. In this study, 57 male babies (5-12 months) with persistent diarrhea of at least 14 days duration were given a week's treatment with a rice-based diet containing either green banana, apple pectin or the rice diet alone. Treatment with both green banana and apple pectin resulted in a 50% reduction in stool weights, indicating that the babies were absorbing significantly more nutrients.

Also, to check how well their intestines were able to absorb nutrients, the babies were given a drink containing lactulose and mannitol. Lactulose is a compound that should be absorbed, while mannitol is one that should not be. When the intestines are too permeable, a condition clinicians call "leaky gut," too little lactulose and too much mannitol are absorbed. After just one week of being given the green banana-rice diet, the babies' were absorbing much more lactulose and little mannitol, showing that their intestines were now functioning properly. Some banana cultivars are also rich in provitamin A carotenoids, which have been shown to protect against chronic disease, including certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. How to identify which bananas contain the most carotenoids? Check the color of their edible flesh. Bananas whose flesh is more golden contain the most carotenoids.

Depends on your goals, budget and what you expect from them. Are you having any problems?

For long distance running I'd say stay away from stimulants! I'd also get something to help protect those poor over worked joints of yours. In this order I'd say:

Fish Oils (NOT Cod Liver Oil!)
Glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM
High quality multi-vitamin & mineral
Taurine

The taurine will help with hydration and also help fight cramps, it's a great supplement. You could also buy some dextrose, add about 40g of it to 1 litre of water and 1g of salt and voila!! You've made yourself some Lucozade Sport!! ;) Important for long distance runners for the electrolytes as you lose loads of salts through sweating.

Jelly is another one, a great source of gelatin, good for the joints.

EDIT - Another one, although not exactly a supplement is oats. Get plenty of them in you before a run to make sure your body has all the fuel it needs. Very good for you and the organic ones are only about £1 for a big bag of the jumbo oats from Tesco, they're delicious :)

I'd also look into some powerfull anti-oxidants. Long distance runners subject their bodies to a lot of physical stress and the long exercise hours produce loads and loads of free radicals that attack your cells. Ever seen a young looking marathon runner? NOPE!
Grape Seed Extract is one of the most powerfull anti-oxidants so maybe look into that, I take 100mg everyday + an extra 100mg straight after I've finished at the gym. Only need very small doses so 100g from somewhere like myprotein will last you years :)

For some reason I read your post as your were a runner? I think I've just read it too fast and seen the "14 miles+ each run" :o

No big difference but you won't be subjecting your body to as much punishment as regards to free radicals and your joints as someone running 14 miles.

If you're wanting to refuel on the go then I'd say go for some kind of liquid MRP (meal replacement) as these should be easier to digest and require your body to direct less energy away from your muscles.

To gain weight you need to eat more calories than you're burning, it's that simple. One easy and healthy way is something as simple as taking a protein shake with full-fat milk and add some olive oil to it or flaxseed powder before going to bed. That's about 600kcals. It's really easy to gain weight and bump up calories, just try and do it with healthy foods and not chips and pizza ;)

Yeah i'm always shocked when i see people buying protein drinks at my gym, £3 for something that costs me about 30p and 2 minutes to make at home. And i don't even buy the cheapest protein powder (Reflex fan:p)

Hi guys,

Ive been on about a 4 month break from gym and everything and im planning on re-joining and starting to bulk up again. Will probably be doing Westside's 5x5 routine if anyone has heard of it.

Im planing on using creatine mono, got my protein already and ive noticed a lot of talk about taurine. Can i use this alongisde creatine? So i just take a few grams of it before my workout and then some mono after?

How about dextrose and maltodextrin? Just bash 40g of each in my pwo shake?

Oh and is myproteins ultra fine oats worth getting? I must admit my shakes were pretty lumpy back when i was using just normal oats!

edit - oh an how about flaxseed powder too? God where am i gunna find the room for all this stuff! lol Ta guys,

Andy

personally i would say no, MPs oats are not worth buying. get some cheap oats from tescos (about 50p per kg) then blend them yourself.
